Miami-Jacobs Career College and Some Questionable Business Practices

Most people, except lawyers and paralegals do not just pick up statutes and administrative codes for light reading. However, anyone who should one do so would have little doubt that the intent of legislature is clear under Ohio Revised Code 3332, Career Colleges and Schools, that the Ohio legislature had every intention of protecting the student, their investment and the investment of the state and federal government's money in writing these laws.

Unfortunately, some for-profit colleges, also known as career colleges and technical or vocational schools continue to operate year after year with impunity -- meaning both the Ohio state and the federal legislature's job is far from over.

It is time for me to take off the gloves and get down and dirty in my quest to educate the public about the business practices of one such school: Miami-Jacobs Career College of Dayton, Ohio. I am publicly accusing the school of the following:

Misleading, deceptive, false and fraudulent information relating to a program.

According to the Ohio Revised Code, this charge is punishable by suspension or revocation of the school's certificate of registration. Here is the actual text in the ORC:

3332-1-04.5 Suspension or revocation of certificate of registration

(F)
Presenting to prospective students, either at the time of solicitation or enrollment, or through advertising , mail circulars, or phone solicitation, misleading, deceptive, false, or fraudulent information relating to any program.... employment opportunity, or opportunities for enrollment in accredited institutions of higher education after entering or completing
programs offered by the holder of a certificate of registration; Any agent’s permit issued may be suspended or revoked by the state board of career colleges and schools if the holder of the permit solicits or enrolls students through fraud, deception, or misrepresentation, upon a finding that the permit holder has violated any provision enumerated in division (A), (B), (F), (H), (J), (K), or (M) of section 3332.09 of the Revised Code, or upon finding that the permit
holder is not of good moral character....

After all, the futures of our young people are at stake here as more and more for-profit schools begin operating each year. Just ask a few weary, frustrated and disillusioned former (and current) students just whose interests are being served at this school, the students....or the administration’s -- and ultimately, the private equity group who owns the school and its 36 other “sister schools.”

Let us begin by reviewing this evidence copied and pasted directly from Miami-Jacob’s Accreditation/Approvals page of their best and, most likely, least expensive form of advertisement, their website:

The Ohio Board of Nursing granted the Practical Nursing program at Miami-Jacobs Career College Conditional Approval. Conditional Approval is the standard approval level for all new Nursing programs.

In fact, in the last year, they have put an overlay on the website so that a prospective student must fill out a short questionnaire, along with name, phone number and email address to enter the site. By doing this, you have given permission for the school to contact you, circumventing the National Do Not Call Registry. This tactic is well used in the for-profit sector of colleges on many sites.

This is what the Registry says in this regard:

An established business relationship with a company also will be created if you make an inquiry to the company, or submit an application to it. This kind of established business relationship exists for three months after the inquiry or application. During this time, the company can call
you
.

There is no mention here of how old you have to be to establish this business relationship, but I am going to assume that if a student is under 18, they must have parental consent to establish a business relationship that countermands the Do Not Call List request by the parent. Unfortunately, there is no disclaimer stating that.

A visitor to the school's website must answer a short survey that includes a name, phone number and email address requirement to enter the website. There is a disclaimer that says they will not share the information with anyone else and will only use it to "follow-up and track visitors" to their website.

If the whole website weren't so blatantly promoting the school, like all the other forms of advertising they use, the fact that they try to gather information to create a prospect database, shows that the website is for advertisement.

Having established that there is some evidence that the website is a form of advertisement, then according to ORC 3332.1-04.5, that website should be truthful and no segment or web page should be written in a way that could be considered deceptive or fraudulent.

While the above statement is truthful that the Nursing board granted Conditional Approval to the Miami-Jacob's PN program and it is also truthful that Conditional Approval is the standard level of approval for new programs, I charge that this statement is deceptive and fraudulent.

That is because Miami-Jacob’s Practical Nursing program is not new and was under Conditional Approval only due to deficiencies in the program. If the program was operating up to par, it would currently hold a Full Approval with the Ohio Board of Nursing. In addition, the program was one of only 7 in the whole state that was also under a Consent Agreement with the board due to long term deficiencies. In fact, the program is so bad that the Education Liaison with the Ohio Board of Nursing has recommended that the program be discontinued. That is not a daily occurrence with the Nursing board.

It certainly appears then that those two sentences were meant to deceive anyone who checked the accreditation page for the Practical Nursing program. That, folks is the definition for fraud. The school deceived prospective students into continuing to enroll in what the school knew to be a sub-par program that was under grave restrictions with the only agency that is eligible to approve the program and license Practical Nurses in the state of Ohio.

How despicable! This school has no moral or ethical bounds when it comes to the almighty tuition dollars flowing through its coffers on its way to Gryphon Investors. The school also never gave any thought to how employers might look upon graduates of a program so bad that it is cancelled by the board at a time when the whole world knows we need more nurses, not less of them.

Not one of the Practical Nursing students were told at the time of enrollment that the school's program was in jeopardy. Now, if the program is actually denied by the Ohio Board of Nursing, the only students who will be able to sit for the test and become Licensed Practical Nurses will be those who have completed the program by the time that the appeals process has been completed and the board schedules the matter for a meeting.

According to Lisa Emrich, MSN RN, of the Ohio Board of Nursing, the absolute soonest that an order withdrawing Conditional Approval could be ordered would be at the September 2010 board meeting. Anyone completing the program before that time (or later, if applicable) would be allowed to sit for the board.

Unfortunately, any student who has not completed the program would be out of luck as far as continuing on with the program, using any of the classes already taken and passed at Miami-Jacobs. The problem is, and has been, that until a program course has been totally completed, these credits do not transfer from one for-profit school to another.
In order to get your money back, you will most likely have to sue. Good luck there, since you signed an arbitration agreement with the school....

I brought all this up in a phone conversation with John Ware, the Executive Director of the Ohio Board of Career Colleges. According to Ware, IF the Ohio Board of Nursing should fail to allow the program to continue (and he doesn’t think that will happen, he says ), his offices would help the students (as it has done before, according to him) to get the loans of the students discharged. I have not been able to confirm this as yet, as this is totally contrary to current federal law, as explained in The Common Manual, the go-to guide for information on the FFELP(Federal Family of Education Loans program).

According to The Common Manual, and this sounds crazy, but here it is in black and white, straight from the source:

13.8.B Closed School

If a borrower (or a student for whom a parent obtained a PLUS loan) is unable to complete his or her program of study due to the closing of a school, the borrower may qualify to have his or her applicable loans discharged. A borrower is eligible for loan discharge of all or part of his or her
Consolidation loan for the amount of the closed school loan discharge that would have been applicable to the borrower’s underlying loan(s). A borrower is not eligible for loan discharge if the student’s program of study was terminated by the school, but the school did not close at that time. An entire school or location must close for a borrower to be eligible for loan discharge.

It would certainly seem like Mr. Ware should know what he was talking about and that I would not question the source at all. However, I spoke to Ware for over an hour and, frankly, I was not impressed. His return phone call was accompanied by a bored, ho-hum attitude about having to return it that I said, "Boy, you're enthusiastic today, aren't you?"

I was really surprised by his attitude from the beginning. During the conversation, I also kept having to ask him why he was being so argumentative with me. I had to remind him that the Ohio Board of Career Colleges and Schools is a regulatory board to protect the students of the state and not meant as a brochure to promote career colleges in the state of Ohio.

He, in fact, was not impressed by Dave Larsen’s piece in the March 26, 2010 edition of the Dayton Daily News about Miami-Jacob’s nursing program and inferred that most of it was not true within 3 or 4 minutes of the beginning of our conversation. That did not sit well with me at all as I have not only read the Ohio Board of Nursing recommendation, I have also read the Consent Agreement under which the school is currently operating. I knew that the article was factual.

I also know, as I have been doing research on this school since March 12, 2009, a lot more information that was NOT in the article that Mr. Ware cited: intimidation tactics that the school uses to keep the students from making complaints to the board, intimidation tactics that Ms. Mitchell uses to keep intelligent people away from the school. I was accused of violating the “Student Code of Conduct,” though I, a 50 year old parent am not a student and was asked not to return to the campus. Gevena Milbrey, 57, is a student who was terminated over false allegations and then “reinstated” by Ms. Mitchell, after retaining an attorney. We also have phony clinicals, fabrication of evidence, shoddy teaching, shoddy training, and much, much more. n We will go into further details over various aspects of this all in future articles.

So....why is Mr. Ware so defensive over career colleges in the state? According to him, he has never worked at a career college and has been with the board for over 13 years. Has it been too long? Have the staff members of the board gotten too buddy-buddy with the “guests” at the board meetings?

While there are more than 280 schools in the state, there are usually about thirty “guests” at the board meetings. At least for the last six meetings that there are minutes posted for at the website, there is always a representative from Miami-Jacobs. Usually both Joannie Krein and Darlene Waite, the college president show up. Waite only missed one board meeting last year.

I am going even further with my accusations and accusing the Ohio Board of Career Colleges and Schools, in particular, John Ware, of dereliction of duty to the state of Ohio, the Governor’s office and, most importantly, the 70,000 plus students who attend for-profit colleges in the state of Ohio.

During the conversation with Ware, I was sickened by his attitude toward the nursing students and the nursing program at Miami-Jacobs. He kept saying that I was basing things on “what ifs.” That is because I asked him what the type of sanctions the Ohio Board would make to Miami-Jacobs. I asked him all these questions and more: “Was the board aware that the nursing program was on a Consent Agreement? Was the board aware that students were being enrolled without disclosing the fact that the program was in jeopardy? Was that even legal? Why wasn’t the board doing more to protect the students in these cases? What would happen to the students who had not completed the program? What about the time and trouble these students have gone through to just not graduate? How was the board protecting the student with that attitude? What about the ramifications of future employment with a known sub-par program? Was he a pal of Miami-Jacob president, Darlene Waite’s? Have they lunched? Attended the same social functions?"(No to the last two questions)”

Disgustingly, he was very blasé about the fact that the students might not get their degrees. They could transfer to other schools, he said. I asked him, “Are you telling me you are not aware that these credits do not transfer, Mr. Ware?” That was when he started telling me that the board would help them get their tuition back....I believe Mr. Ware was again confusing the issue. If the Practical Nursing program closes, the students are on their own....if the whole school closes, the students have access to the Ohio Student Tuition Recovery Fund.

Mr. Ware and his cronies at the Ohio Board of Career Colleges are not doing their jobs, folks. You can swear me in before the state legislature and I will attest to it. I have more on this and will report on it in a future article.

It is up to a court of law to prove the criminality of these allegations that I make toward the school. Unfortunately, there is no court of law currently taking Miami-Jacobs Career College to task over violations of any state or federal law. (The first sign of evidence that the members of the Ohio Board of Career Colleges are not doing their jobs.)

That is why I chose to conduct my campaign in the court of public opinion and am not afraid to do so. Do you think that the school should have been required to disclose to enrolling students that its nursing program was in jeopardy? Do you think that the board should take a greater role in regulating these schools? Stay tuned for part two of this article before you decide.

In spite of my accusations toward the board, I urge you all to file any and all complaints that you have about Miami-Jacobs to the Ohio Board of Career Colleges. The school has a pattern and a history of student abuse, intimidation, shoddy programs and more. There are plenty of people stepping up all of a sudden and telling me their stories. I've had three phone calls in the past three days. If you have a story, call me at 727-638-2178. Let us all work together to force the board to do its job. It is past the time for the board to have its eyes opened about this school and others like it.

  2. Do you have a real job?? Way too much time invested in this for someone who is a real estate agent whose not even working! You need a life! Sounds to me like your looking for a suit to support yourself nicely.

  3. no she is just looking out for those who have thought about attending mjcc. too bad i didnt see this site before i started there. biggest mistake of my life, i refuse to pay 22000 for a very bad education, the teachers there dont even teach. they do not care about the students, they just care about the money. you must be one of the crappy instructors there if you are defending that crap hole of an institution.

  4. MJCC is a joke. If you're reading this and wondering if it's true, please believe me it is. Instructors are pathetic and the staff is as well. They only care about initial enrollment and getting your money. I withdrew after three classes. PLEASE don't waste your time and money on this school.

  5. That is hilarious, Anonymous (12:52 pm). I am supported quite nicely already. Though I am far from rich (money-wise), I am fortunate enough that I only have to work if I want to. Still, I am very rich in that I have four beautiful grandchildren whose lives are my life. As you may have read, my beautiful granddaughter, 2, had a brain tumor and my #1 priority is her recovery. At this stage in her recovery, I have a bit of time to do two of my very favorite hobbies: research and writing. That may change later, but I have a bunch of research material that I haven't even gotten to use yet, so I should be able to continue the writing and revelations for some time to come....In fact, you ain't seen nothing yet!

I have no basis for a personal lawsuit with this school, though I can see plenty of other people who do. I will gladly cheer them on from the sidelines as they file THEIR suits against this school. My daughter could possibly have a lawsuit against the school as a former Massage Therapy student, though she has never contacted an attorney and has no current plans to do so.

This actually is the basis for a planned future article, but what the heck? My daughter and ALL current and former Massage Therapy students have what could possibly be a potential lawsuit with the school. That is because, out of all the programs available at Miami-Jacobs that require clinicals, the Massage Therapy program is the only one that requires ALL clinicals (except for a very few two hour "chair massage" events) to be done at their FOR-PROFIT Serenity Spa, using these students as unpaid workers at $30 per hour.

This is in spite of the fact that massage therapists frequently work in health care settings, such as CHIROPRACTORS OFFICES. This is blatantly a misuse of clinical hours and demeans these students who PAY THE SAME AMOUNT of money as the other students of the school. Are they students or workhorses?

The school could argue that it is perfectly acceptable (and there is a precedent as other schools do it too) in massage therapy training to require students to work at a spa where customers are charged money. I quite understand that, but at THIS SCHOOL, it is the ONLY program that requires it (and the only program that has a "clinic" from which the school can make money. The way I see it, if the programs all cost different amounts, you could say that using the student to make money was to help offset costs in supplies, etc. However, there is no way to offset the costs of supplies in other programs and they cost the same amount, meaning that effectively, the student, by working for the school, is paying a potential $6750 more in tuition than other students.

Have you never heard of the word volunteer or advocate? I do what I do, not to make money, but to assist the students. I started to type "young, single mothers" as that is what my own daughter is. As I also was once a young single mother, I can put myself directly in their shoes.

BTW, you seem to be very snitty in your comments....and, perhaps, concerned that I have so much time on my hands that I could be potentially....dangerous? I sure would like to know who you are, anonymous. You certainly are not one of the poor students getting ripped off at the school. School administration? Hm...at least I am NOT AFRAID to step up and show who I am to the world. Come on! Let us know who you are. LOL

  6. I ,for one,am very thankful that Connie took the time to research all the info she has and post it for all to see,for the one that responded at 12:52am ,I ask the question-obviously YOU took the time to read her post,do you have a job and why do you care, could it be you are a mjcc staff member because we know they are monitoring this site.As far as lawsuits, yes they will be forthcoming and mjcc knows that, that's why they are enforcing the level 2 and the 85% on the comprehensive, they know most of the students will not get a level 2 or 85% because they have not been taught,so they will fail, which knocks out a lot of people from the class-action suit that will be filed, talk about a bunch of demons!!!I am so glad this site exists, wonder who else is reading it?Let us all keep writing the board of nursing, though they do not advocate for the student, this kind of stuff is not helping mjcc, too many complaints will hurt anybody, besides ,mjcc does so much dirt they are hurting themselves and they have been doing it for so long!!Keep up the good work Connie,we need you.Word is getting out, people are responding and mjcc is angry and when the devil gets angry he makes foolish mistakes but be verrry careful mjcc, the board is watching you.

  9. Thank you all for backing me up. I love what I do here and I do think that I am making a difference for some of the students. At the very least, a wronged student knows that he or she is not alone. There are many wronged students before you and with you. I seriously had no clue of the magnitude when I got started last year.

As more and more of us come together, we create power to change the system. As you have read in this very post, the system is broken. That is how this school has been allowed to run roughshod over their CUSTOMERS. Yes, CUSTOMERS. When you attend a for-profit school, you are not only a student, you are a CUSTOMER. You would think that a business in this economy would want to take better care of their customers, but because this sector of big business is spoiled by the constant flow of huge amounts of state and federal tax dollars into their private equity funds, they have lost site of who is paying the bills. There is no recession in the for-profit college biz, folks.

While trying not to sound grandiose in my particular plans, I do believe that, by working together, we can make a difference.

  10. Connie, keep helping us,we need you and mjcc is afraid of you, lol!!!For everybody else, you better check on just how much you are going to owe when you graduate and remember you can't file bankrupcy on a student loan and there is no statue of limitations(a friend just paid mjcc off from a loan they said she had 16 years ago),in other words you will have to pay all that you owe, even if you die the money will come out of your estate if you have any and they can and do garnish social security, pensions, alimony, income tax wages anything you have,so don't think you are not going to pay the money back, trust me,you will.

We are praying for your grandaughter and appreciate that you care about of us! Seems to me if Miami jacobs cared about us or ANYthing besides theirselves it would not have to be a site! please keep working for us connie we need a voice and an oulet we dont have it at this school its not just the nursing program its the whole school! This school needs to be stopped before they ruin more lifes and more peoples credit who are trying to do better in life wow talk about selling false hope!

  12. Okay I for one am not afraid of posting my name on this blog. Though I do agree that MJCC has alot of work ahead of them I absolutely do not agree that ALL the teachers are there to just make money and not teach. I am a graduate of Miami Jacobs and have found employment based on passing the state boards and standing on my own abilities and accomplishments. I will agree with you 100% that Miami Jacobs needs to get there shit together and it was not a good experience that I had there. But on the other side of that I had a few outstanding teachers that I would go to bat for in a heartbeat. They went above and beyond what they had to do and they themselves are very upset at the crap that is taking place there. So all I ask is do not generalize the entire staff at Miami Jacobs there are many there who are there for the students and have proved that to me while I was a student there

    ReplyDelete
  13. One of the very very few good teachers at mjcc is Ms.Benetta Moore-Miller and I agree with Randy, not all the teachers are bad and some of them really do care,it's just so very few of them. Please contact Alex Earls at Gryphon Investors,415-217-7405,e-mail:earls@gryphoninvestors.com.He is one of the principals at Gryphon which are the OWNERS of mjcc and is very interested in hearing from you all about this school.wouldn't you be if one of your lucrative investments was in truoble with the local boards, bad publicity in the local news,a website dedicated to their destruction, and very dissatisfied students, past and present, fraudelent practices by staff not to mention the financial aid department? My mission has now become to notify Gryphon Investors and Delta Ed., about all this,I'm going to be so kind as to send them both these sites including all comments, the boards site concerning mjcc and the write up from Dayton Daily News.It is time for them to go down!

  16. To Anonymous, March 31 10:26 p.m., whose goal is to inform Gryphon and Delta of the problems with the school....good luck. I never tried Gryphon, but I sent a 50 page (lol, not overkill....really?) overnight package to then CEO Joseph Kennedy last year. That was one of the ways I KNEW this school wasn't worth a S#*t (excuse my language, but I did get expelled for saying that, even IF I said it real low and no students were around, only Marcia Byrd, Debbie Brewer and Faith Mitchell....). I knew the school was worthless because I never heard ONE word back from this guy! That told me everything I needed to know about the company on a larger scale. If Delta ultimately says they have been clueless, well, I will never believe them! Still I am glad that you have a "mission." I do believe that, all of a sudden, it is contagious! I always knew this all was bigger than me and I am glad that you all are starting to come up with great suggestions and solutions to move this all along.

I don't know about you all, but I am glad to be a part of all this. I know that only good can come out of this, no matter what the end outcome is. That is because this school is no longer operating in the dark. The students deserve to know who and what they are dealing with, and boy, we are still finding out revelations daily! Keep those stories coming....Can anything about this school even shock us anymore?

P.S. To Anon 3/31 11:24 p.m....fortunately, you live in the age of Spell Check. Many very intelligent people in big jobs that are not spellers. I suggest that if you need to impress someone (say, an employer) that you email or comment to, that you use your word processing software, then copy and paste it. Your comment made me laugh. I like your sense of humor!

  17. As far as I know, what the MT's do...not having attended MT classes myself, is called an internship. Lots of students I know do the internships for their clinicals. From what I understand, internships are generally an unpaid job where students get hands on and job experience. Some other programs do it even though they aren't required to, just to get job experience. No internship I ever heard of was a paid position. It is kind of like OJT's. Internships are great for your portfolio and show that you know what you were doing. Personally I think the MT's are lucky to have the clinic on site and not have to travel over heaven's half acre to get to them. Plus they can get customer reviews and evaluations of their performance. I think it's a great idea!!!

  18. A S,let me tell you about an internship that pays while in school, electricians are in training for 6 years and are paid for their internship from the very beginning, how do I know this,I'm married to one!!!!As far as clinicals being great for our learning and good for our portfolio's,well that would normally be true but at mjcc you get very little hands on because the instructors are afraid to "put my license on the line" this is from the very ones that teach us in class, what does that tell you?

    ReplyDelete
  19. That would tell me that they have students who aren't making them feel comfortable about doing that for them. Maybe they don't feel their students are competent enough to handle the responsibility of working with patients....that's when the instructor should go to the school and report the students who are lacking and hold them back out of clinicals. What did you do about what they said? Nothing? There are people you can speak to about this, but I am sure that it just made you angry and feel defeated rather than actually want to make a difference by going to the proper people.

As far as electricians, of course they get paid because they are union. If I was endangering my own life working with electricity that could kill me, I would want it too. If you are in the medical profession, I would think they would want to pay the patients to let you work on them. You could kill them by making just one wrong decision. So when I was speaking of internships, I was speaking, of course, about the medical profession....the subject we were on. Maybe you missed that part. It's ok, I understand.

Follow the proper proceedures to take care of the problem of not getting hands on training. Go to the program director, if that doesn't work, go to the dean, if that doesn't work, continue on until it does. Complaining about it on a website doesn't fix the problem. It just gets it off your chest for a while.

You have a job as a student to be responsible for your own education. If you aren't getting what is stated in your competencies to be done, follow the proceedure for getting it done. You got to help yourself first before anyone will be willing to help you. You can't expect everyone else to hand you the answers and say "it's ok, I'll take care of it for you" and expect to be able to wash your hands of it because everything will be rainbows and sunshine tomorrow, because John Doe is going to fix it for me. No one is going to hold your hand through out your tenure as a student and alert you when you should get up and make good decisions.
I had a job where I was a counselor, referee, mean person, nice person, the adult to people twice my age, a mother, a friend, a life saver, a coroner, and an advocate. I was never paid more to deal with everything I had to do. I worked for one place where I put my life on the line everyday for FREE. My pay was very meger. My job was to make VERY important decisions about the lives and deaths of not only myself, but others. I also was charged with helping others make the right decisions. So I am very aware about what it takes to make the right decisions and which avenues to take to get there. Please follow my advice. The net won't help you....Most of the people want everyone else to solve their problems for them, so they really don't want to do for you. (They will call it the "Cause", but is your name in the cause?) An important saying I have learned to adopt that makes a lot of sense is #1 comes first. #1 is you. Also, when in doubt, don't.

Hope this helps. Don't rely on anyone to fix a problem you can fix yourself with much less effort. I am one of the crazy people who actually believe that if you encourage others and guide them to the right road...they might actually get on that road and follow it to where it will take them. But that's just me. I think most people have at least a hint of good in them.

So to all of you who want to be paid for your internships....become electricians! Thanks for that insight ANON!

I passed my class with a C!!!! Most of the class should have failed. But not one single person did. Yea, there's a serious problem there. Shut this school down please!!!

  24. My terminology is good because I paid attention. I also learned earlier in life that if you are going to call something by it's name, don't guess, know. My job for 4 years was to tell other people's story and get it right, if not, things would go wrong. I was taught and practiced the truth and telling it. Sorry if I got the electrician internships wrong. But why fault me when I can convey messages easily? I am not a teacher....I have left the school because I graduated. I would say come find me, but you would be searching for someone who is not there. Sorry. If you don't believe me, go to the person you think I am and state a direct quote from one of my posts. See what reaction you get. Good luck to you all...I'm done answering questions from those who really don't want to know the honest answer.

    ReplyDelete
  25. As far as conveying messages easily, you need to go back and tell the administration that your messasges didn't convey as easily as you obviously assumed they would. After jumping on me for supposedly giving out erroneous information, you are mighty nonchalant about getting some information wrong....

Again, while we are happy that you had a good experience, there are many who have not. If they had, there would not be people from every campus who have not only written here, but have personally contacted me with their stories of intimidation, revolving doors for staff and too much more to mention here.

As for answering questions, I do not recall anyone asking you any questions other than letting us know who you are....as for "honest answers" it appears to me that it is you who is hiding your head in the sand. These complaints are legitimate and these people had a bad experience with the school.

While we offer equal opportunity space for those who had a good experience without censor, we do take exception to those who would think that just because THEY had a good experience, that everyone must. That is not only erroneous, it is illogical.

To others who might read this who had a good experience, we welcome your stories as well. I wrote these blogs to give people the information to make the right choice for their educational future, not just the admission rep's who is nothing more than a commissioned sales rep, much like a used car saleman.

  26. It is a free country so say what you will, but I know who you are. I am a realtor and you are aweful. So on a personal basis...get a life!!! PLEASE!!! You may say your being an advocate, how?? What is your highest level of education? So how long have you been researching this? Not long enough to make some of the statements you make. You have no education in nursing or message therapy OR ANY MEDICAL TRAINING OR LEGAL TRAINING TO GIVE ADVICE!!! You copied and pasted most of your statements and used legal jargon to make yourself sound good. When is the last time you worked by the way?? Go ahead and lie to these people like you care. Oh and by the way many colleges use on site facilities. AND what do you think nursing students do at clinical sites. Everyone else gets paid to do the work they do, but they don't. But you know what that is how it is at any school. Fact is YOU do NOT get paid for clinicals..PERIOD! And with all the other colleges around competing for sites..your lucky to just get a site. I know more about this than you, pretty sad.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh that last bit was regarding message therapy not getting paid at the spa. Because if your going to say they should be paid for that you might as well say nursing students should be paid at clinicals too. They work hard and don't recieve a cent, why don't ya write the board about that Connie and see what response you get. Also many schools use for profit sites and their own facilities.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I am a WRITER, not an attorney, not a nurse, not a massage therapist. Also, the only advice that I have given anyone is that if they have a complaint to file it with the board -- or to go see an attorney. I have never represented myself to be anything other than what I am. At Hubpages.com, a group of writers numbering over 127,000, I am in the top 1 - 2% of the writers there at any given time, depending on the day.

Writers do not have to be educated in order to report on certain industries, subjects or anything else. What they have to be willing to do is RESEARCH, something I am very good at and LOVE to do as a hobby.

Other than that, I just interview and report on what I learned. The main point is that EVERYTHING that I write, I can back up with research. I am very, very careful about that.

An advocate is someone who supports others or who acts for others. What I have done is to give current students of MJCC a place where they can talk freely about their experiences at the school without threat of intimidation, coercion or termination. I have also tried to educate the fine folks of the Miami Valley that this school is not the same school it was in 1907 when great-great grandma went there. It WAS easy to equate this school and lump it in with UD, Wright State, Sinclair as a great school when, in fact, there are many problems to address.

I did not cause the nursing program (or any other)to be sub-substandard. The MJCC management did. They are too busy covering up problems to address problems and fix them. That is what I discovered last year when my own daughter had a problem. Because I felt so helpless at the time, I decided to help others who did not have a mother like me who would research 18 hours a day to ensure her daughter's future -- something I can do because I am 50 years old and DO NOT HAVE TO WORK UNLESS I WANT TO.

BTW, I admitted as much when I reported on the Massage Therapy program making the students do clinicals at their own school. The difference is that this program is the very same price as others and has a FOR PROFIT SPA that the school profits from. It would be different if the students had the opportunity to do clinicals at, say, a chiropractor's office or other medical facility. No, the ONLY PLACE that is allowed is the school's FOR-PROFIT SPA at THIRTY DOLLARS PER HOUR.

I question just what YOU do know. You admit to going to Miami-Jacobs, a school that I just am not at all impressed with as an institution of higher learning.

When I was active as a Realtor, I did quite well. As you may or may not know, the market has been down for several years, so I took some time off. I still am affiliated with Century 21 on Clearwater Beach, I just choose not to work right now, which is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS. Also, my education is none of your business, though I have never claimed to be a PHD or have any other degree. However, I do claim to be able to back up everything I write WITH DOCUMENTED RESEARCH and THAT I can do.

Sounds like a mjcc employee to me! Connie please dont let this woman/man get to you She is a joke! This shows us what the staff does all day instead of providing a proper education , as one person said on this site audios amigos mjcc!

  31. Goodby mjcc and good riddance! I was downtown today and what a wonderful experience!!Clayton Luckie is not your everyday Joe,he is a state representative that has gotten involved,no one can demean that.I am so glad and now I also have someone else to go to and go to I will come Monday 4/12/10 with my story and documentation. He said there is going to be a publis hearing about this school and he wants everyone that has issues with mjcc to attend with letters in hand with pictures of their families attached, these letters will be sent to all the "boards, accrediting agencies and others because the word must get out"I love it,I always told you all this school was going down and I want to be on the ship.I have a lifeboat!I will be part of the class-action suit and make no mistake about it,there will be a suit,or I should say more suits,at least 2 lawyer's was there today (they are also representing the surg tech students) and remarked that the publicity is good, bad for them(mjcc) good for us.Who in their right mind will sign up now to attend there? And you know what, the publicity is just getting started,I personally know a student that is just waiting in the wings to see how a situation will turn out and if it does not turn out right quess what, there will be major publicity concerning her case,it just gets better and better, lol!!

  35. I posted a link to the Ohio board of nursing website on the MJ Facebook page. I was then called into the deans office. At the news conference I told the news about it. Now I have been blocked from the MJ Facebook page. They don't want people to know what's going on.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thanks for that information, Katie. Some people posting, not only here, but at the site of the two new articles at the Dayton Daily News, just do not get it, do they? Thank goodness all of us are getting it -- getting the word out, that is, any way we can. Anyone who thinks the students -- who are paying a LOT of money to this school --do not deserve to know this information has a real problem.

  37. For all those that are interested, Erin Moore, attorney, of Green and Green in the Schuster Building in downtown Dayton would be my first stop if I was interested in filing a suit with Miami-Jacobs. She is not my personal attorney, but is involved in the Surgical Tech lawsuit. I did meet Ms. Moore when another student recently retained her on a different MJCC matter. Nothing about this school surprises her so you will have a sympathetic ear.

  41. I went to MJ for a bit in the IT course, once I started actually taking the computer classes (it took 6 months!), I noticed they were all "independent study." That's when I decided if I was going to teach myself anyway, hell, I may as well go buy a book, keep a few thousand dollars in my pocket, and not waste the time of going back.
I found myself amazed at the fact that, in a college atmosphere, I was able to take open book/take home finals (wish they would have done that in high school). Most of the classes I had seemed to teach me about "attending" college rather than what I came to learn. The only time the staff ever seemed truly concerned is if a student committed forgery or didn't follow the dress code.
Bottom line, the place is worse than a bad joke. If you want to throw your money away for no good reason, blow it on shoes or something... '!Viva La Shenanigans!'

I was at the town meeting Friday and I tell you it was just sad,sad to hear how the school has treated the student's,stories of people's lives almost destoyed, bankrupcies, downright criminal acts by staff, fraud you name it they have actually done it!I hope they all pay for what they have done to people and I know if they don't get it here on earth ,one day they will have to face their Maker and in that I take comfort.

  45. It is a shame that all of this is just coming out. I do not believe that this mode of operation is new, but long term activities on the part of the administration. From the time that my own daugther had her problem, the way they treated us... I realized that something strange was going on. Nothing, NOTHING that I have heard since has surprised me! I regret that all of us had to learn the hard way in order to create the change, and make no mistake, we are going to change the way career colleges do business in the state of Ohio!

We are not the only ones in the country who are fighting this fight. There are too many more where students have had problems: Corinthian Colleges (my daughter is starting Wed. at one...), Kaplan, and too many more to name.

An article in the St. Petersburg Times on April 11, 2010 says that the Dept. of Education is thinking about making the amount of student loans restricted by the amount of income a graduate can expect to start in his chosen career. Believe me, the bigwigs at on this one. Arthur Keiser, a big private owner of a chain of career colleges in Florida flew to Washingon in his private jet for meetings about it. The Career College Association (CCA), the national assocation whose members are career colleges has already donated more than $150,000 for 2010 to congressional candidates. Keiser has over $66,000, making him one of 12 top donors. As we can see, this is big busine$$ at its finest.

I am hoping that, as we do our small part in one area of the country, that it helps not only us, but that, by our story, we can help prosective students everywhere.

  46. ok...for one...you all have NO lives!!! seriously is that all you do is sit on here and bash MJCC and some of you even go there...how pathetic is that. And two...I know Mrs. Schilling a LOT better than all you think I do and trust me she would not get on here and waste her time posting stupid shit like all of you are. And about not getting paid for the clinical hours...seriously SUCK IT UP...your in school for a reason, deal with it. You made a choice to go to this certain school or possibly send your child here and now all your doing is bitching about it? You all need lives, and trust me anyone working at the school could get a job tomorrow somewhere else if they had to, so don't waste your time telling the teachers to start worrying about unemployment. Cause if you haven't noticed most of them have their masters. But really in all honesty everyone who is putting the school down is pretty lame i think because no one takes a step back to see that the staff are all human beings and they have families and lives outside of work just like all of YOU do!!! So you all need to grow up and maybe focus on school a little bit more so maybe when you get out of MJCC you can pass your NCLEX on the first try. Stop blaming the school just because you don't want to put any time into your own education, you all just expect the teachers to dump the info in your heads and be done with it. YOU HAVE TO ACTUALLY WORK AT IT!!!! Stop blaming the school just because it's the easy way out!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ok above me, I guess you enjoy giving 7,000\year or more to someone only to educate yourself. And I guess after wasting your money, you also enjoy not being able to use that expensive sheet of paper, simply because no employer or respectable college considers it worth anything. When I've mentioned to potential employers that I went to MJ they give me a cross look, and after laughing, ask how that went.

Yes, we have a right to complain, the right to aim the blame at where it is deserved. If it were your child, brother, sister, parent, spouse or god forbid yourself that was being boldly taken advantage of I'm sure you would do the same!

So I'll say, if you don't like what we have expressed here, then go to hell along with Miami Jacobs!

  48. Very well said, last poster! We do believe you, Anonymous, that you know Ms. Schilling a LOT better than we do...we do not work with her! While Ms. Schilling may be above posting "silly shit" on here, it is obvious that you are not. You seem to enjoy taking every post out of context for your own amusement or again...maybe it is your reading comprehension level. We do not blame ALL the staff at the school(s) for the problems there. The ADMINISTRATION is to blame. By that, I am speaking of those who manipulate every situation (something like you try to do with these posts) to their advantage by TAKING advantage of (sometimes) young and inexperienced students. We are sorry for the faculty who are not to blame as, just like the last poster trying to get a job, they are going to be tarnished with the same brush. What other school is going to hire a teacher for their nursing program who taught at a school whose program was so bad that it was recommended that it be cancelled? When they try to get another job, they will know where these students are coming from. Also, again, NO ONE expects to be compensated for clinicals! PLEASE LEARN TO READ!! That was said in conjunction with the Massage Therapy program because the students ARE REQUIRED TO DO THEIR CLINICALS AT THE SCHOOL'S FOR-PROFIT SPA!!! This is in spite of the fact that there are a LOT of medical massage situations that they could be doing clinicals at! Get your facts straight before you post. It is getting annoying.

  49. Connie, I am not only disturbed that you write some of the things you do. You certainly must have a lot more time on your hands than most. Anyway, here's my take on it.

First of all think you should change your current degree to something that is more suited to you, I'm not sure if they have a meddling-crass-negative position you could apply for somewhere, maybe to be a snake-oil saleswoman, who knows. I truly think the only reason this blog has gone as far as it has is because your ‘friends’ are commenting on the posts, and you have your Channel 7 husband to help you with the wording and understanding. I am truly not interested in what you say, only what MJJC says. Do people not understand that when they call out names of teachers, (ex AS, SB, Dr Ware, Dr Puckett, etc) and students that opens them up for a lawsuit? I too have been frustrated, but not enough to throw names in the blog to make those people’s names be trash. They are all people with feelings, desires, and FAR more education than those attending the school. I would feel inclined to trust their judgments far beyond my own.
It concerns me more that there are people in the medical field who would be so ignorant as to throw their colleagues and advisors under the bus. If there is something a teacher or advisor does that you don’t approve of go through the chain of command. Don’t post it on a blog and sign Anonymous. How rude, and insensitive to the ones who are here to train us.

So for all of you still reading, JUMP OFF THE BANDWAGON Connie has started. Find your OWN reasons, go through the proper channels to get your answers, get things in writing, and PRAY for the people whose names have been unrightly placed in these ridiculous blogs because they have been hurt and misjudged without a cause.
I want to be known as a problem-solver, not a problem-keeper. Connie, you and I are just on opposite sides on this one. And for those students who remained anonymous in the statements, it’s clear who you are. You are the ones with the loudest comments and bad attitudes. Do us all a favor and drop out, so those of us who want to learn will have a better opportunity to without you here.

I’m not afraid to sign my name, M. Kay Williams

  50. Kay, last night there was an expose on "for profit schools" on Frontline you can access it PBS.org it's very eye-opening. You may change your tone if you see it. Proprietary schools are making huge profits with little or no government oversight. Too many students are left with nothing more than tens of thousands in debt and nothing to show for it.

  52. Kay, we appreciate you leaving your name. You do not have to be "afraid" of us (or me). Unlike MJCC, we (I)do not retaliate when people do not agree with us (me). I usually just come back with logic and reasoning and let the other person know why they are wrong.

I do not know where you got the idea that my husband works for WHIO. I wish he did, because then he would not have been dead for the past 3.5 years. No one helps me with wording and understanding. I have had an above average vocabulary, along with reading comprehension and writing skills most of my life....and I certainly DO NOT attend MJCC.

Other misinformation that you have written is that John Ware is a doctor (not true) and neither works at MJCC. They both are with the OHio State Board of Career Colleges in Columbus. The only thing that I reported on Dr. Puckett is that he rarely attends board meetings. As for John Ware, executive director, who is working both sides of the fence when his office is the REGULATING board, there are not enough negative adjectives to describe my contempt for him. No matter what you think of MJCC, and this is a totally separate matter, this man needs to be fired! He is way too cozy with the very people he is supposed to be regulating. This is why MJCC has been able to operate the way they do. It is disgusting!

I have personally never made a derogatory comment about any teacher at the school as I know NONE of them. I have, however, made comments about Faith Mitchell and Marcia Byrd, who I have dealt with. MJCC can sue me all day long. Every word that I have ever written on them is highly researched and I have printed out the material that it came from. I would welcome the publicity of a lawsuit, actually, as it would help to bring all this to light. They are not going to sue ME, however, as I have no signed arbitration agreement to keep it out of the public eye and the court system. What you may not know is that anyone can write anything about someone and it is not libel unless it is NOT TRUE. Believe me, I am very careful.

I do not understand that anyone, at this point, can believe that this school is being unfairly targeted. We have accreditation issues, false advertising, intimidation, discrimination, articulation issues, credit issues, lies....it just goes on and on. What is it that you don't get?

  53. Thank you, Anonymous, for posting the link to this informative program about for-profit colleges. We are doing our own small part in Dayton, but I am finding it very interesting that for-profit colleges are going under the microscope all over the country. There have been quite a few articles in our local paper, the St Petersburg Times here in Florida about them and none of it was flattering.

Still, we need vocational education in higher education. It is a shame that some greedy for-profit schools are giving the whole industry a bad name. My own daughter just started a new program at Everest, a for-profit school owned by Corinthian. They do not have the best reputation and have had some of the same issues that MJCC has. I am not happy about the choice she made, but unfortunately, the other choices out there were no better. With the proper regulation, these schools can prosper and so can the students. I wonder why some people do not want to see that happen.

  54. Connie,
Thank you so much for starting this blog and giving some of us an outlet to express with eachother our experiences with the school. I started Miami-Jacobs in August of 2008. I went in just to "talk" about the program but quickly got suckered in. I was promised great teachers, and great clinicals sites, well needless to say that did not happen.

So I started in 2008 and everything was going bad from the begining. They did not have my books or uniform on time the teacher was not there for the first week of class, so we had a teacher from another class running back and forth from classrooms making sure we did a crossword puzzle. I then started getting harrassed by a group of students I was told everyday that I was a B**** that i was going to get slapped and that she was from the "bad part" of Dayton and would not hesitate to have someone take care of me. Despite over ten attempts to let Miami-Jacobs know what was going on there was nothing done to her to make the nonsense stop. I was scared to go to school and to go to Clinicals when she was in my clinical group.

While at Miami- Jacobs I always had good grades about a 3.5 GPA. This is because they let anyone pass. Then in January of 2009 I had a scare with cancer. I still stayed in school even returning to school the day after my bone marrow biopsy, and still passed all my tests and IV certification. In late april I got very very ill, to the point where I could not stand, eat,or walk. I had been diagnosed with a cyst in my brain which was causing my symptoms. I had to quit Miami Jacobs in May just three months before graduation. I was promised by Diane Cook that I would be able to start from where I left off when I was ready to retun to school. When I went in there after I had healed I was told that know I actually failed the 3rd quarter and had to retake it????? I wanted to see proof that I had failed I wanted to see the tests I knew I passed, the papers I had turned in yet they could not produce them!!

I would not advise anyone going here. although i did try and go back it was only because I was stuck, I had put 6 months into it and there credits will not transfer. I was promised great clinicals. I was stuck in a nursing home the whol time and was told to sign off on certain things that I did not even do!! I did no get one IV stick, never put in one cath,or took anyone blood. Yet I was told to sign off on such things, or I would not be able to continue! At one point my group did not have a clinical site for a good 6 to 8 weeks.

The board came to visit shortly after I had started and we were told that if we did not say good things about the program that the school would be shut down and we would be stuck paying all the money without a degree, at that point one student had mention then I will just sue you. The admin then stated no one is going to sue this school who will they believe a school that has been around for over a 100 years or a student.

As I sai earlier I was going to go back just to finish even though they were going to make me start from 3rd quarter, there was just to much invested at that point not to., but now they are losing everything and when I went in there I was told that now finacial aid no longer covers everything so I would have to pay 200 a month out of pocket! I of course a single mother cannot afford that. i wish I knew what I could do to get my money back from them!

  57. I am a bit disappointed that no one has commented on my two articles about the Ohio Board of Career Colleges. This board is your last resort before arbitration to file grievances about your school. The fact that this board is sooo closely aligned with the career colleges that they are supposed to police should be of grave concern to you all. It is one of the reasons why you are all having the problems that you do at MJCC. Please read these articles and then contact your state representatives. It may not help you, but we can all make a difference for the future. Here are the links:

  58. Well, I have had a really good experience so far at Miami Jacobs. I go to the Troy campus and the teachers do teach there. I will admit that they have some issues with the nursing program, but I'm sure they are not the only school to have problems. Overall, I am very pleased with the program I am taking. I believe that if I am willing to do the work, I can get a good job when I graduate. Oh, by the way, I do not work for MJCC. I am a student there. My name is Melissa Harriger.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Hi Melissa, thanks for taking the time to post. You are right that this school is not the only ones with problems. Many of them have problems, the first being that the tuition is out of line with the starting salaries of many programs at career colleges. The federal government is working on that issue right now and it is about time.

As far as Miami-Jacobs goes, I am sure that there are many more students like you who are having a good experience. Since you didn't tell us what program you are taking, I assume it is one that is not threatened by a lack of accreditation that some of the programs have faced or are currently facing.

I do hope that you have a great experience and an even greater career ahead of you. Many, many people at MJCC have before you. Still, please do not make the mistake of thinking that all of these people here who are having problems that you have not faced is because they are lazy, stupid or unwilling to do their school work. It is NOT the case. Here is an example that anyone should be able to understand: Melissa and Betty both bought Toyotas. Betty's Toyota had a brake problem and accelerated at inopportune times, causing Betty to have a wreck. Rightly, Betty wanted Toyota to take care of it since it was a problem with the car that caused the wreck and had paid $22,000 for her totaled car. Toyota denied the claim. Even though Melissa did not have the same problem with her Toyota, does that mean that Betty's Toyota's brake and gas pedal worked properly? Of course not...and like in reality, eventually the truth comes out and the public is made aware of the problems at Toyota. Melissa is fortunate that her $22,000 investment was safe. Unfortunately, Betty was not so lucky, along with the many others who bought faulty Toyotas from a sleazy manufacturer who knew there was a problem.

The class that had so many problems in the pn program the past few months has completed the program and I use the word complete lightly, most, read me now, most of them failed to get level 2's on their ATI's but they will march as if they have graduated. They have 30 day's to get a level 2 but come on,do you really think mj will not pass them through? The sad part of the whole thing is those nurses that have practiced in the field for many years are going to put people out there that are downright dangerous and quess who they get to work on,you got it,you,me and our family members.Brandy, you need to be ashamed of yourself, where are your ethic's,where is your love for your profession and your compassion for the sick, remember this, one day you and/or yours will get sick and the way things work the very ones you let get by will work on you.I know you was aware of the cheating yet you did nothing,I am ashamed of you and what you represent,we were much better under Ms.Cook,at least she cared about her profession.I am one of those that really did complete the course the hard way,I studied!!

  62. Thank you everyone for your input! I was going to attend MJCC, Springboro campus, the Business Office Management(since I have been doing that anyway)program. I have only gone through admissions stage, but read the back of papaerwork I have 5 days to reconsider attending. So, I am off to the school to advise them in writing I will not be attending.

  63. I haven't posted in a while but just wanted you all to know that Sept., is a big month for miami jacobs, they get back some of what they have done to us,they will not be accredited by the bd. of nursing,(PN Program)thank-you Jesus for hearing our cries out to you!Oh by the way ,they finally fired Shella Baker, took em long enough !!!!!!Now if they just get rid of that evil Brandy Cottrell!

  64. So....Shella Baker is gone. How in the heck does Marcia and Faith keep their jobs? Not to mention, Ms. Darlene Waite herself, who allowed her son to win a "contest" at the college back in 2000. It is totally pathetic as the contest was for students to train in Microsoft certification so that "they could make money for college." I find this so sickening and unethical of Darlene Waite, who could have afforded, not only the Microsoft training, but should also have been able to help her son at college (that one graduated from Vanderbilt). The other one, Nick, graduated from Ohio State and works at Miami-Jacobs. He maintains the website, knocking out some poor unemployed student who made the unfortunate choice of attending Miami-Jacobs computer progam, spending thousands more than they would have on a four year public degree... Speaking of websites, the accreditation page of Miami-Jacobs website STILL perpetuates the notion that the "conditional approval" that they hold from the Ohio Board of Nursing is "standard approval for new nursing programs..." without disclosing to the prospective student that the program is getting ready to possibly (most likely!!!) be shut down. Really, the ethics of president Waite are quite clear. She has none!

  65. connie, Im not sure who you are or why my name is being mentioned and talked about on your blog???? I know your probably just listening to Gevena Milbry who doesnt say who she is. Im really upset that I am being talked about in a negative way when all I want to do is help students out?? I dont work there anymore and Im happy about that because I dont believe students are EVIL , even when one of wants to harm me and my career because she screwed up and she had to trhow me and all her classmates under the bus , even her own daughter, who does that???? Iam glad that im not there to get the blunt of whatever they had going on. the student that told the lie on me about fordging something is dead wrong and I truely wish would stop dragging my name thru the mud. how awful is that? you all have to remember that on both ends of this thing are PEOPLE with real lifes, real feelings, and real careers. why would anyone try to hurt me for doing something I didnt do. I shouldnt give a darn about what this student says because she obviously is miserable, but I do because I care about the students, so it would be wonderful for them to tell the truth and stop this nonsense, I was nothing but nice to her. s

  67. I have never mentioned your name in a negative light, Ms. Baker. "So....Shella Baker is gone..." is not a negative comment. I do not know you, but I do know of you and that you worked at MJCC. My daughter attended MJCC and I have personal experience with the ineptitude of the financial aid office. It is true that I have met and count Gevena Milbry as a personal friend. That is because Ms. Milbry came to me and showed me a letter that she received that was very similar to a letter that I received from Faith Mitchell. Gevena's outlined several accusations (that could NOT be proven) and she was being dimissed from the school. She, of course, was later reinstated because the accusations were FALSE. In my case, the school closed down on me when I asked for the chain of command. At that time, the school was still trying to pass themselves off as the local Harvard that had been in operation for 150 years, instead of the FOR-PROFIT school owned by a private equity group. I realized immediately that the school did NOT want to deal with an experienced parent, but an inexperienced student and I was gotten rid of. This blog is my answer to that. I went home, did my research and decided to let the court of public opinion decide whether this school was operating primarily for the education and welfare of its students or for the bottom line. I think we all know the answer to that.

    ReplyDelete
  68. By the way, Ms. Baker, Gevena Milbrey has documentation to back up everything that she has said. In fact, she sent ME copies of eveything. I have a letter that, to me, proves that the school was discriminatory in the treatment of certain students that missed clinicals. Several students in the nursing program were able to make up a missed clinical by writing a one page essay. Several others, who happened to be black were told that they must write a 25 page essay on why discrimination does not work (as the students were alledging that). I think the teacher who came up with that should be the one writing the essay. In addition, I did read several text messages that were printed from the phone of a student that you text messaged, that included your name and your phone number. I will not repeat that here as you are probably perfectly aware of what you texted to the student. As far as I am concerned, all of the documentation that I received from Ms. Milbry showed me business as usual by the school: a total lack of regard for the students, no clear rules (making many of them up as they go) and the school making up wild accusations, cover-ups for mistakes, and on and on.

In addition, Ms. Milbrey is not a young 20 year old student, like so many who attend the school. She is a fifty year old woman who is well respected in the community, a religious woman, a mother who has the respect of her children, including the one you think she threw under the bus, and a wife who has been in a stable relationship for over 30 years. This woman and her claims are valid. She has the documentation to prove them and when the school decided to use Ms. Milbrey the way they've done so many others, they picked the wrong person. She is not a young uneducated and scared student without resources, she is already educated and has the resources needed to fight for her good name.

  69. Well well well,Shella has decided to call me a liar,I hate that,I really do.Actually Shella I'm very happy,I don't know why you said I was miserable(gloves now come off)I still have my husband,he has not left me for another woman,I have never been fired from a job and I'm not in danger of having my license taken because of unethical behavior,I have enough money to do whatever I want to do,my reputation has been vindicated,I act my age and am doing quite well thank-you,my family knows I would stick with them to the very end whether they are right or wrong because I love them,it's as simple as that. You had us sign the clinical sign-in paper in advance for Feb 5,2010 at Livingston Care Center and made it perfectly clear we were not to show up or call or go to the school, this was the second time you did that, then you got scared, you texted my daughter several times and you called me several times concerning that situation, quess what, the texts were shown to the PNAdministrator and the Clinical Director, the voice mail I have is copied and ready to go to the Ohio bd.of Nursing alone with a slew of written statements from some students about your conduct which I have to tell you Shella, you were not as well liked as you thought youy were,"they threw you under the bus".Now I have to decide if I want to send all the documentation I have concerning you to the board and I have to tell you,you have just about made my decision for me.You called me a liar, don't do that again, really, don't.Don't talk about my daughter, don't.I don't like that kind of stuff. You did some really unethical things Shella and it would be in your best interest to leave me and my family out of your lying mouth, prove me wrong because I most certainly can prove your dirt, signed sealed and waiting to be delivered. The reason I can't sign with my name is because I'm really not that good at computers but just for the record my name is Gevena Milbry.Oh and another thing,I'm not one you want to take on,I will outlast you, whether I ever work another day in my life,I have the financial means to deal with liars like you, have a nice day and don't bother to respond,it will only get you in more trouble,it really will, you know I don't play.

  72. I recently quit Miami Jacobs after being there for over a year. Had only one year left then I would have been through the RT program. I got concerned over the accreditation issues, but what REALLY concerned me was the fact that not only they lied about a lot of things to our faces, they expected us to lie about things they did not do as well. They (our two main RT teachers) failed to teach us and was too busy doing other things (like signing up for a cruise in Jan) that they didn't have us do any labs or complete any competencies, and there about 30-40 of them. Instead, they decided to have us fill them in one day with perfect scores and sign our names so they could sign theirs. These are things we needed to complete for clinicals. They also gave us the answerss to their test so that we could pass their test...but in the end,, we learned nothing that we needed to know. I had good grades. In one year I had almost straight A's (two B's). Our clinicals were supposed to start in Oct, but we got pushed to Jan cause they were having trouble getting "sites" since the school is such a joke...and they had plenty of reasons why those hospitals didn't want to work with us which told me they were avoiding the real reasons. And when our compus director came in to talk to us when they withdrew their appeal of losing their accreditation (so we were no longer accredited for the RT program, though we were promised we'd get to sit for our boards - though last time I checked we had to complete clinicals in order to do that), he was a joke. He would have been a great politician cause he "could answer any of our questions" but then never really told us the answer to the question but instead did a complete circle around the issue and tried to turn it into "the school cares about you"....but then when people started pointing out the things going wrong, he was all of a sudden done and "would meet with us one on one" cause he knew that the "truth" was coming out! I HATE THAT SCHOOL! I am so in debt from them and refused to pay another penny! Just angry now I am out money.

  73. I hope you file a complaint with the Ohio Board of Career Colleges. You can print out a copy of the complaint form here at their website:
http://scr.ohio.gov/ConsumerInformation/FilingaComplaint.aspx most students probaby think it doesn't do any good, but you know what? It doesn't change what has happened to you, but it is DOCUMENTATION about Miami-Jacobs. Anyone who has read my article about the Ohio Board of Career Colleges knows that I am not too fond of the way they regulate Ohio's for-profit colleges, but that doesn't change the need for us to actually COMPLAIN. This is one of the reasons why Miami-Jacobs gets away with what they do and why the Ohio Board of Career Colleges can look the other way. Complain!!!!!!

I feel so bad for you and all the other RT students, both former and present, as well as the nursing students, who have really gotten a bum deal. Many people would blame me (and have), thinking that I riled up the students and caused negative publicity that made area employers not want to hire MJCC students.

You know what? My goal was and is negative publicity for the school. The reason is because of your letter, which is a never ending story from students who have attended this school. Right now, in Congress, they are discussing whether to take away the gravy train that these for-profit colleges like MJCC ride on. For-profit colleges who have low placement rates would not be eligible for federal loans and grants. Don't you wish that they had done that last year? You wouldn't be up to your eyeballs in debt for schooling that does you NO GOOD because their programs are sub-par. It is shameful! Of course, the big guns are out, the private equity groups that own these schools have hired the big lobbyists to protect their interests, so it is on hold for now...that is why your story needs to be told. Don't quit telling it to anyone who will listen! Don't you wish someone told you about MJCC before you signed up?

  76. To Anonymous, who posted on Oct 13 at 6:22 pm, I have Google advertising on this site. Unfortunately, I cannot pick and choose the advertisements and they usually are geared toward the subject matter: in this case, for-profit schools. U of P is a for-profit school. The fact that I have NOT received even ONE PENNY from this website from anything, much less Google advertising tells me that people are listening to me when I talk about these for-profit colleges. If they were clicking on it, I would have made money from it. I also can see the irony in the advertising.

Yet, I have NEVER said that ALL for-profit schools are bad and that a student should NEVER attend one. What I have said, time and again, is that the government has let higher education down in the area of vocational eduation. Not all students function well in a traditional college setting.

My own daughter still attends a for-profit school, even after the problem with MJCC. She needs the small setting, the one class at a time approach, and hands-on training.

I have a problem with MJCC, their business "methods," the training of some of their employees, their lies to students, the lack of government oversight by the Ohio Board of Career Colleges and more, more, more.

Folks, I do NOT expect you to click on any advertising unless you are interested in it. I do NOT start this blog for money and I do not keep it for money, which is a good thing since I would be might disappointed right now if I did.

Google's ad program is generated by subject matter, but for ANY STUDENT considering ANY COLLEGE, I suggest doinging your homework BEFORE enrolling so you don't end up in the same shoes as some of these students. Again, it is shameful.

  77. THIS IS A TWO-PART POST DUE TO LENGTH...

To Anonymous who posted on Oct. 13, 2010 at 6:34 pm: Thank you for giving me this opportunity to clarify some items about Darlene Waite and her family. I did not and am not taking "shots" at Darlene Waite's family. Here are the facts:

I do not know where you got the idea about me complaining about Darlene Waite or MJCC hiring their own students. Did you think Nick Waite actually went there to school? HA! HA! Of course, he did not. Nick Waite graduated from Ohio University (I thought it previously said OSU, but this is current), according to his profile at LinkedIn. Nick's current job is:
Director of Student Success at Miami-Jacobs Career College.
Past Position:Public Relations and Customer Relationship Manager at Miami-Jacobs Career College Education:Ohio University

Now, Nick Waite may be imminently qualified for his job. I never said he was not, really. After all, we may be assured that he has, at the least, a bachelor's degree at an ACCREDITED university.

I am not sure if he is still the "webmaster," but he was a while back. BTW, Miami-Jacobs has a new and improved website. It is riddled with bad grammar, punctuation and formatting: many words do not have any spacing between them. It looks very unprofessional. And, oh yes, the practical nursing program is STILL listed as a program that is taking in new students...but the respiratory therapy program (which recently lost its accreditation) has been removed....

    ReplyDelete
  78. Darlene's OTHER son, Jon Waite, did attend MJCC for a short time...back in the year 2000 when Darlene was the vice-president of the school and a 17 year employee. I read about it in the newspaper archives.

This was published in the Dayton Daily News on March 30, 2000 in the Centerville/Bellbrook edition:

    SOUTH-AREA STUDENTS CHOSEN FOR PROGRAM

"The Center for Information Technology at Miami Jacobs College in Dayton has selected Jeff Case, a junior at Centerville High School, and JON WAITE, a sophomore at Oakwood High School, to participate in a certification program called NetPrep 2000+."

HERE IS WHAT WOULD BE THE FUNNY PART IF IT WERE NOT SO DESPICABLE:

"The students are among eight from the Dayton area who will spend Saturday afternoons through June attending classes that will prepare them for A+ and Network+ computer certifications.

The goal of the program is to give the students the skills to earn money while in high school, and help offset future college expenses...."

"Case is the son of Jack and Susan Case of Centerville. Waite is the son of DAN and DARLENE WAITE of Oakwood.

Participants were chosen on the basis of grades, a written essay and referrals from teachers."

So, Anonymous...are you saying that this is moral? Ethical? Not something to be ashamed of? Darlene's son was 1 of 8 out of all the entries in area schools and Darlene did not step up and say, "Wait, that is my son! I will pay for his schooling at MJCC because I can afford to. I am the V-P of the college!"

Do you REALLY think that he was chosen because his essay was better than all of the other kids who were dreaming about winning? Microsoft certification was big! What a difference it might have made in the life of a poor student in a poorer community who actually NEEDED HELP TO LEARN "SKILLS TO EARN MONEY...." and to "HELP OFFSET COLLEGE EXPENSES." Don't you think there is a reason why family members are NOT ALLOWED to enter contests? Jon Waite did NOT have to attend a sub-par program at MJCC and was able to have the money to attend and graduate from prestigious Vanderbilt University. Wonder what became of all the other contestants who didn't win? Despicable!

Daddy, Dan Waite, worked at Lexis-Nexis. Hm...where have we heard about Lexis-Nexis? Oh, I remember now! It is one of only TWO companies mentioned on the MJCC website that hires graduating students from MJCC.

I stand behind my statement that Darlene Waite's ethics are lacking. As president of the college, she is Faith Mitchell's boss (of the trumped up, made up accusatory letters to both Milbrey and myself), the boss of Marcia Byrd, who actually told a student that they didn't accept federal financial aid loans from outside lenders (a violation of federal law). The school hands out a list of 6 other schools who take their credits and only one actually does, another Delta school (I have a copy of the list btw) lying to students, the public. Only AFTER my original articles were published did MJCC ever admit that they were owned by Delta. A financial aid officer gives FALSE financial aid information to the parent of a student (that almost ruins the students's future)and, not only is the parent accused of lying, the employee is never seen again in the building...transferred! The "ethics" of this school just go on and on. Darlene Waite as president is responsible for EVERYTHING at this school. As far as I am concerned, this school has engaged in CRIMINAL activities and someone should be prosecuted for the fraud perpetuated on the community, the lives ruined and the millions of taxpayer dollars that have been wasted. The website still contains FALSE INFORMATION, which is a direct violation of Ohio law and is a reason for school closure. The Ohio Attorney General's office needs to step up to the plate. It is certain that Waite's buddy, John Ware, of the Ohio Board of Career Colleges is not.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Transfer of credits is solely left up to the school that the student is enrolling in. For example if I attended Harvard or Sinclair CC and I wanted to transfer to Notre Dame or Wright State then it would be up to those ND and WSU to accept my tranfers. I admit that they will take more credits from schools like Harvard than Sinclair but thats common sense. As for the rest of what you said I dont know the Waite's or MJCC just saw this post.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Yes, anonymous, you are right. The new school decides which credits transfer -- if any. That is the problem with MOST for-profit CAREER colleges. RARELY do ANY of the credits transfer to ANY OTHER school. I question why...a nursing program, for instance, should not have transferable credits from one institution to another in the same licensing state. This should be a legislative issue due to the obscene waste of money.

I am so through with this teacher autonomy thing that gets talked about. In a licensing situation, like nursing, where the board approves the programs, wouldn't it be more intelligent for the BOARD to come up with the program outline, the particular classes, the VERY textbooks, the RULES that must be maintained by the nursing student in order to pass and take the boards, etc. If this were the case, a student who attended MJCC could easily transfer to another school, along with their credits intact, should the situation warrant it. For instance, say the husband gets transferred to another city, why should the nursing student lose all the credits and hard work she has put into it (or the husband...plenty of male nurses), or if the student has a problem with, say, BAD financial aid ADVICE, or with a teacher, or with the hours that the classes are available?

Who thinks that nursing SHOULD NOT be taught using the BEST text books available, an approved OUTLINED PROGRAM set up by the Board of Nursing and like training at ANY SCHOOL? Currently, to start a program, a school hires an RN, who as program director, sets up the program, picks out the textbooks, etc. Does this program director have to be experienced at this or just a nurse of a certain level? This just does not make sense to me.

    ReplyDelete
  81. When I was speaking about unethical and CRIMINAL activities by this school, I forgot about the students who told me that the school COPIED A TEXTBOOK without permission from the publisher and actually used the copies for student textbooks without paying for them.

In a normal school, the textbooks are separate from the tuition. In fact, according to state law, the textbooks are not allowed to be lumped into the tuition and the student has the right to buy the textbook from outside sources other than the school.

At Miami-Jacobs, the books are, of course, lumped into the cost of the tuition anyway. They seem to make their own rules without consideration to Ohio code. The reason for the law is probably due to situations in which some colleges might try to cut costs (being for-profit) by not actually buying the textbooks that the students need, but copying them. In addition, this might also lead to sub-par textbook purchases for the same reason. Hm...do we want the $50 book or the $125 book, where we can save $75 per student. That cost could add up -- and affect the bottom line.

Again, one can see that the intent of the legislature is to protect the student from the big business that owns these schools. However, someone has to actually make sure that these schools are operating according to those laws. That is what the Ohio Board of Career Colleges are for. Too bad that they are lacking in their duties to the students of the state of Ohio.

  84. Anonymity is misspelled in the above email. A typo and one that can not be changed once posted, unfortunately. However, I must say that there are many, many people who are intelligent, well educated, successful and cannot spell. When we are on this site, we need to worry less about the spelling and more about the content -- and what we can do about it. I am sure that most people on here would use their word processing program and spell check if it was important to do so. It is not. We are informal here, not uneducated.

As far as Faith Mitchell goes, I saw on the Ohio Board of Career College minutes for a monthly meeting that she had been transferred to Cincinnati. While Ms. Mitchell should have been fired, the fact that she has not been tells volumes about Delta Career Education Corporation, the company that actually runs MJCC. She has committed FRAUD AND DECEPTION against past, prospective and current students, which is in direct violation of state law. It is an offense that SHOULD be enough to yank the registration of the school -- if only someone was paying attention...like John Ware of the Ohio Board of Career Colleges and his investigator, Kim Stein. I guess they are too busy working on the software program for new agents through MaxKnowledge, as employees of that company. Of course, MaxKnowledge is run by the trade group of the Ohio career colleges. Some people might think that is a conflict of interest to be employed by a group that you have been directed to regulate. Obviously, I am the only one who sees a problem with it. Of course, John did remove his picture from the website, but guess what? I have a nice copy of it, just in case....

    ReplyDelete
  85. Quite frankly, I am sickened by all of the false accusations made about not only MJCC but Faith Mitchell as well. NONE of you know the WHOLE story, as the media seems to only put the negative out there. Sinclair Community College Nursing Program, as we speak, is going through even worse issues in the fact that they, for years have had non- licensed instructors teaching their students. Yet I haven’t heard a word about that. In addition, who are ANY OF YOU to say that someone "should have been fired" or were transferred to another campus as some hidden scheme to cover something up? That is quite simply ridiculous. I was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio and have been local business owner that works closely with MJCC in placing students in employment after graduation; working with many other local Colleges offering Nursing, Surg Tech, and Respiratory Therapy programs; and have had the opportunity to compare skills of many grads coming out of these various programs. I have hired, placed, and had wildly successful experiences with many MJCC students in Hospitals, Long Term Care Facilities, DD (MRDD) Facilities, Hospice Environments (both in home and in facilities) as well as many other Proprietary Education Programs students. Have there been issues at Miami Jacobs? Clearly...... (just like many other schools) but in my opinion as an unbiased business owner who has done much research on this matter, they have taken EVERY APPROPRIATE STEP to try and rectify the issues. They have not hidden from them, nor have they tried to cover anything up (unlike other programs that have had issues). In addition, I have worked with many of the faculty members and instructors at all the MJCC campuses, as well as other many local educational institutions, and can tell you that I have been thoroughly impressed by the passion, vision, and “above and beyond” mentality by the majority of them. I’m sure most of you will passionately disagree with me, which is fine; but I ask you this: How many Healthcare Providers have you hired? How many Healthcare Organizations do you work closely with? And furthermore, how many of you can base you opinions on facts, as an outsider with no reason or benefit from siding with one position or another??

    ReplyDelete
  86. You must be delusional. First of all, you do not have thousands of dollars on the line, spent for a worthless education. From your letter, we can assume that you have attained a good position. I then assume that your knowledge comes from a working relationship with the college and that you never attended the school yourself.
Quite frankly, I am sickened by all the people who do not have $$$$$ on the line and their futures bleak deciding that the rest of us are just troublemakers. Why? What would be the motive? I have better things to do than take on a non-issue.
I have never said that all the students who attended the school did not have passion, vision and "above and beyond" mentality. Most of these students did, too, before they bought into an education that the Ohio Board of Nursing finds unacceptable, that COARC withdrew its accreditation for the respiratory therapy program, before the surgical tech students found that they were not getting what they were promised. Are you telling me that these are lies? They are not, I assure you. If Sinclair's nursing program is worse than MJCC's, they would also be on Consent Agreement and in danger of losing their license. I deal in facts only.
If any of the information that I have personally written about is untrue, I would have had a lawsuit the size of Georgia on my hands. It is called libel if I do not have my facts in order. I do and I have proof of all that I say.
Of course, anyone with a brain would wonder why Faith Mitchell still has a position (along with Darlene Waite) when they were at the helm of these substandard programs. The Dayton campus had more nursing students than any other program. That is a major financial hit.
The negative publicity of the school is directly related to the performance of these two administrators. Had they been able to administrate, none of the students would have an issue, would they? This is not just a few disgruntled students. There are MANY.
If you are not an outsider, it means you work at the school. We have enough misinformation from employees, thank you.

  88. Why don't you give us the FACTS then? These are the facts as I know them: ....am I wrong to say that it is unethical for Darlene Waite's SON to win a contest at Miami-Jacobs when she is college vice president? What about all the other families out there whose mother was not a college vice and soon-to-be president? Many kids were dreaming about becoming Microsoft certified, yet they never had an opportunity because Darlene's son took one of the coveted slots. He did not have to "win" to attend. He could have just attended or she could have paid for him to attend. This was in the newpaper and is a FACT. It really turned my stomach to find that out.

What about all the students who were lied to, who were not told that the $22,000 program that they were signing up for was sub-standard and in danger of being closed down? May God have mercy on the souls of those who have used young, inexperienced, poor students, many who have families and exist from week to week, to put riches in the hands of private equity investors, while promising the moon to these students. I KNOW that Marcia Byrd, FINANCIAL AID DIRECTOR,did not have an accurate and complete understanding of the Master Promissory Note that mortgages the futures of these students. I can PROVE THAT. Yet, this school asks young, inexperienced students to sign away their future. You are the one who does not have the facts. These students were lied to and promised a lot , little of which was delivered, and yet you want to belittle them! You do not have thousands of dollars and your future on the line! May God have mercy on you...you are a puppet.

  89. to the person that said mjcc college places students in positions that is an outright lie i graduated at the top of my nursing class and my phone number was given to home health non-skilled agencies that paid 8 dollars and hour when i called career services and told them to only give my number to places that hired LPNs they stopped calling they did nothing for me or anybody else that i no!

  91. There we go, Anonymous poster who is a local business owner that places MJCC students! Here we have a student, top of the class....why don't you post your business name here so that students can apply to your businss for placement? You could really do a lot to help these students and turn them into grateful graduates instead of disgruntled ones. That would be a big help to the school. How about stepping forward and quit being Anonymous? We would love to give you the kudos you deserve for placing so many MJCC students!

  92. Wow, I haven't been on this site for at least 6 mos. and I can't believe you all are still going back and forth. I know it is good to vent, but what a waste of time posting comments on here. If you are really interested in the policies that are in place then go to the board meetings, find out more productive ways to solve the issues. This is not doing much good, most the people that see this only want to sling mud.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Okay, I've read ever post from top to bottom. These issues are not isolated to Ohio. Everything posted regarding, fraud, lies, and unethical and illegal behavior by the institutions, is accurate. I am a former employee of Delta and I can tell you firsthand that I have witnessed these issues time and again. Many campuses hire instructors that do not have a degree. As a matter of fact many of their employees, including administrators, do not have a college education. I can also say that they also hire employees, some in management, that have attained only a GED. These are the people who guide prospective and current students! Mistakes/intentional misleading practices are made consistently in HR, Admissions, FA, and Academics. When these issues are brought to the attention of the campus director the outcome can be either good or bad depending on who you are. If you are an easily impressed student you may receive special treatment, but if you are an unhappy employee who is not easily swayed, you may be terminated. I want to know if there are any former employees out there who would like to chat?

    ReplyDelete
  94. I am sure that you will get a hit or two on the chat with former employees. I also would love to chat. I am currently dealing with an issue about Miller-Motte, a "sister" school also operated by Delta. I plan to write an article next week about it. As usual, it is an accreditation problem....I am tired of these career colleges being able to screw over the student with unaccredited programs and get away with it! Where are our legislators? Where are our attorney generals? This is wrong on so many levels.

As usual, anyone may contact me at 727-638-2178 to chat. I am interested in what anyone has to say. I always do my research after, so I am not a pushover and like documentation to back up complaints. Still, even if I don't write about it, I have it filed away for future reference, if there is no documentation. Call me at 727-638-2178 or email me at connie997@aol. com This is my personal email address and my only phone. I put myself on the line by using my personal info and my real name. I can be trusted. I also never, ever use a student's name without permission, or even use a situation that can be attributed to a student without permission. My only goal is to gather info and redistribute it to others so that we can work together to make changes in the system. I am tired of hearing the same sad story.

  95. Has anyone stopped and thought about the dozens of people that MJCC has let go in the past 2 months. MJCC is faling apart - the ones who are still employeed are scared they will get notice they are not longer "needed" any day.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I have not heard anything about this. I am at a disadvantage since I do not attend the school. All of us on the sidelines who work to try to help the students would certainly appreciate being updated on current events. Please, please keep us informed.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Having worked there quite a few years (I've been gone awhile) I can almost guarantee you the loss of staff is directly related to enrollment. No students, no need to have instructors. In addition, I'm sure those in charge of bringing in and retaining students are being held accountable. All the bad publicity about the malfeasance at the school can't be helping. Students and potential students aren't stupid. All they have to do is go on the internet to find out about all the problems they're having. Connie, I think I can give you some insight about that place, I'll call you.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I hope students are doing their research before enrolling. It is a horrible thing when you see naive, trusting individuals enroll in classes not realizing until about week two that the institution certainly isn't living up to their promises. By the time reality sets in it is too late and they owe the money. Admissions is all about making promises, smiling sweetly and holding the students hand until after the drop/add period. They need to make their goal in order to keep their job and keep the campus director happy. If goal is not met, the campus director will enroll employees in classes to meet the goal. It is pathetic hearing everyone talk about 'changing futures, changing lives' when in fact it is all about the bottom line and doing whatever they have to do to meet goal, not about changing futures! They should have a revolving door on the building because turnover at these campus' is unbelievably high. Turnover is directly related to poor management. Promises made to prospective/incoming students are broken more often than not and the admission reps say whatever they need to say in order to get the student enrolled. For every positive thing that comes out of the mouths of college representatives, there are three negatives to counter it. I do acknowledge that there are some students who are satisfied and embrace the entire experience, however the numbers are small, and of course the college is only going to publish or acknowledge those comments which are positive. The negatives are only talked about behind closed doors and they work diligently to keep them covered up. My campus director's motto is: "We take cash, check, or charge, how would you like to pay?" I suppose this is how it is at any 'business', however at least in these normal businesses customers are completely aware of what they are getting and are not mislead, lied to, or taken advantage of. I applaud you Connie for trying to do what you can to uncover the serious problems with these schools.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I would love to talk to more employees who have information to share with us. We are intersted in any information that would help these students make the right career choice when deciding upon a school.

When I got started here, when I Googled complaints about Miami-Jacobs Career College, nothing popped up. Now, I have four articles on the first page of results. That definitely makes it easier for prospective students to do their homework. The only problem is that we are still working against the long standing of Miami-Jacobs in the community. A lot of people do not understand the difference between a for-profit career college and other private universities. The students just know that Miami-Jacobs has been around for years, so they must be doing something right.

The more the school is in the news, the better for potential students and others in the community to understand what the school actually stands for: the bottom line.

Please, anyone who has information -- student or past employee -- please let us know.

Thank you for the compliment, Anonymous. They help to fortify us against the attacks.

In a for-profit school, the students are CLIENTS -- customers who should be treated fairly and with respect. No student should ever expect to be able to come in and "buy" their education without working for it. For the price of over $22,000, the student is buying a GOOD education. When someone spends $22,000, they expect VALUE for the money: excellent textbooks, up-to-date equipment and decent clinical sites in places that the students would like to work at.

Well over a year ago, we knew that Grandview had a problem with the education of respiratory therapists. Only now, we find out that the accreditation was in jeopardy. Why? The program was not operating up to par. We need to call our legislators and insist that new laws be written that force these schools to disclose the TRUE status of their accreditation. After all, this not only affects the educational value of the dollars they are spending, but future dollars as well in the form of the best jobs out there in whatever program the student chose.

  101. I want to thank everyone for the useful information about Miami-Jacobs. I actually made a visit to the Cincinnati campus this week and they definately made the school sound wonderful. I will be layed off in the next few months and decided that going back to school is the best option for me at this point. I am so glad I found this information because I was really leaning towards enrolling at Miami-Jacobs. Being single, just trying to make it on my own, I don't have the money to throw around on an education. Thank you for helping me make my decision...

    ReplyDelete
  102. You are starting your schooling out right, by doing your homework BEFORE enrolling! You are the real reason I started doing this...so that prospective students could make their decisions based on all the facts, not just what an admissions rep (AKA SALEMAN) tells them. I actually have a job description from MJCC for an admissions rep. It says to "entice" the student and build excitement.

I remember the pat answer when I asked about credit transfer (I went with my daughter)...."Oh, well, you know, we are accredited by (blah, blah) and of course, it depends on each individual school on whether they will take any school's credits...." That is so true, but they KNOW that no one will take their credits (this is the case with most all for-profit schools, so beware!!!), not even the ones on the list they hand out to some students. I called them all and they all said no...except for Miller-Motte, which is owned by the same company.

I went to Sinclair, starting in 1977. Believe it or not, NEARLY ALL of my credits transferred to St. Petersburg College this past September when I started there. The only difference is that Sinclair did quarters and SPC does semesters, so the credit allowance was a bit different. Unfortunately, they took EVERYONE of my FIVE F's that I got from way back then, even if a class didn't match it, lol.

You can see the difference though....33 years later, MANY of the credits at Sinclair still transfer, where NONE of MJCC's from LAST YEAR transferred from my daughter's $11,000 education there. What a waste of money...the student's AND the government's!

I also started this site so that students who were having trouble knew that they were not alone and that, together, perhaps we can all make the needed changes so that students get the education that they are paying for. I appreciate everyone who has contributed.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Connie you are right on again when you called the admission reps "salesmen". As a former employee, I can tell you that they skirt around the truth. They will rarely answer a question directly because their number one goal is to fill the seats. They are all fully aware that the credits will not transfer and try diligently to skirt around that issue and in most cases are successful because the prospective students come in looking for guidance. They assume that the representatives at a college or honest and forthright and care about people. Many college reps are caring and honest, however when it comes to Gryphon Investors/Delta Education and all those schools owned and operated through these companies,...it is all about the money. The college employees are trained on what to say and how to represent and no matter what someone says the reps will smile and skirt around the true issues. Students will pay on average $30,000 for a diploma, certificate or associates degree and will make a starting wage of $10 per hour when they graduate. When they realize this and choose to continue their education they then realize their credits are not accepted at legitmate institutions of higher education which are not for profit schools. It is incredibly sad because most of these individuals are already on shaky ground, meaning they are single parents, middle-aged, or down on their luck in one form or another. They are looking for the light at the end of the tunnel and these for profit schools feed on them. I feel the anxiety building as I think about the damage these institutions are really doing. I'll give you a call at some point Connie, however at this time I am not free to do so.

  104. Faith Mitchell no longer at the Sharonville Campus. She is on "leave" until further notice. Christine Dosland is not able to lead the team so a REAL leader is there Mr. Ned Snider. He can turn this around. I hope he can clean up the mess Faith and Christine have created here. I pray the students stay with us!

    ReplyDelete
  105. While this is something that I have wanted to see for a long time, it is a hollow victory (if she is gone for good). Faith Mitchell, during her reign of terror, hurt a great many students, both pyschologically and financially. She did not care that my daughter, a student who enrolled in good faith, was not eligible to attend any school in the country, based on BAD advice from her financial aid office. She just used soap opera tactics to try to get rid of that student AND the parent. That parent is me. She also used soap opera tactics to rid the school of a student who wouldn't shut up that was in the nursing program, making up lies that were blatantly false. I just cannot feel sorry for her, if she has finally been fired. Too many futures, other than her own, have been ruined due to her (and Darlene Waite's) mismanagement of what used to be a reputable school. The students who stay are at a disadvantage. Due to the mismanagement, the school's reputation has been damaged. While many would blame that on me and others, I had no control over Faith Mitchell's actions or others who could not perform the duties for which they were hired.

  106. What is really sad is that mjcc is still operating and I wonder what will it take to shut them down? For the person that said she couldn't believe people are still posting let me tell you why they are:so much money for loans that have to be repaid for such a poor education received, employors that will not hire a mj grad just because they are a mj grad(remember we went to school to get a job,to make a better life for ourselves and our families and I can personally tell you most of us only learned how bad the schoolwas/is after we were in it,too late by then to get out,you still must repay those loans)and sometimes just knowing that you are not alone helps. There is not too much more we can do(besides the class-action lawsuit that's coming, thank you Jesus!)This site allows us to stay current with what's going on and gives us an opportunity to express our feelings. Now,my question to you is why do you participate?

  109. Thank you to whoever wants me to keep this going. Don't worry, I am not going anywhere and if something happened to me, my daughter would keep it going for me. This website (or an even better one...) will be up and running as long as MJCC is operating. Even if MJCC closed down, until for-profit schools are properly regulated in the state of Ohio, there is more work to do. MJCC would not be operating the way they do if the schools were regulated properly and certain discloses (like lack of approval or low ratings with licensing boards and accreditation agencies) were mandatory. We need a shake up at the state level at the Ohio Board of Career Colleges. Are you listening, John Ware? You need a leave of absence too!

  111. This is an interesting turn of events. Do you know what the goal of the meeting is? I would like to see all the students address the Ohio Board of Career Colleges, who has turned a blind eye to all the shenanigans at the school, in spite of knowing about them. They are the REGULATORS for ALL the programs, not just nursing. They have the power to shut down the school that no one else does, since they are in charge of licensing the school and overseeing the operations to protect the students in the state of Ohio.

I understand that there has been a changing of the guard at the school, with both Faith and Darlene gone. I hope that the new administrators remember that they are there to serve the students, and not just the bottom line. Still, that does not take away from the past and the sub-par education that many received, along with the accusations and other things that Faith and Darlene put the students (and their parents through). Does this school and its administrators go unpunished? I sure hope not, since many of the students who attended the school are still punished for choosing that school every month when the excessive loan payment is due and also in the termination or delay of their career goals. The fight is not over yet! I hope many of you will attend the Board of Nursing meeting to let them know how a shoddy program affects the future of nursing students. This program was allowed to go on too long after the board found out the program was substandard. It is criminal for prospective students not to HAVE to be told that the program is under investigation, but, unfortunately, it is NOT criminal. I have a problem with that.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Hi Connie ,the goal of the meeting is to determine if mj will be allowed to continue the nursing program(Rep.Luckie is asking that all students, regardless of their program, attend if they had problems in their program so I'm sure those issues will also be addressed). As you can imagine staff is afraid they will lose their jobs and they will if the board rules against the school,I intend to be there to help them rule against the school.I don't neccesarily want to see people unemployed but after all the dirt that happened and how we are having a harder time than other grads from other schools it's kinda hard to be sympathetic towards any of them, they knew at least some of the dirt that was happening and did nothing to make it better for us.The hearing will be in Columbus which may present a hardship for some to attend but I encourage all that can come to please come, your voice is needed, you do count!I will have to make some sacrifices to attend but I am willing to do so,it means that much to me.

  113. Today,January 21,2011,Friday,the Ohio Bd.of Nursing has revoked Miami Jacobs Career College as a provider of a practical nurse program and I must say,YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS,thank you God,Clayton Luckie and all those brave souls that stood up against that horrible place called a college and continued to call, write and talk about the unethical behavior practiced by staff of the PN Program,it has been a long time coming but it has come, finally. My heart goes out to the students unfortunate enough to still be enrolled in the program because effective today that program is no longer accredited per the board.Sue them for reimbursement of your money because no school is going to accept your credits and you know the school will not willingly refund your money.Well Brandy, looks like you will have to find another job,you too Jackie, hope you learned a lesson,it has been said that what you do under the cover of darkness will be brought to light, you are lucky the board didn't take your license, what a disgrace to the nursing profession you both are.

    ReplyDelete
  114. I believe that post says it all. I especially like the line, "....what you do under the cover of darkness will be brought to light...."

The TRUTH is finally out. This is not the local Harvard. This is as fly-by-night as any school out there who is using an old and respected name to intice students to join and hock their future for an education they may or may not receive. We, who have been accused over and over again as being the liars as well as you all being too lazy, etc., have been vindicated. It is indeed a fine day in that regard. Please read the next post for additional comments on a lawsuit.

    ReplyDelete
  115. PLEASE, please add the Ohio Board of Career Colleges to your lawsuit. The board was aware of the consent agreement at the Board of Nursing, yet granted this school approval to operate the program at even yet ANOTHER location. Fortunately, the program was not instituted but it was approved. I can prove that.

The Ohio Board of Career Colleges exist through Ohio Statutes to protect the students of Ohio against unscrupulous schools like Miami-Jacobs. They have not done their jobs. By just approving the school to operate in another location knowing that they had a shoddy program is proof of that. The board is directed to make recommendations to the legislature when they see a need. I certainly see one, when I see that students are allowed to register in a sub-standard program without being informed that it may close before they can complete their degree and that the credits will MOST LIKELY (99.9% of the time) not transfer. It is an insult to the students of the state. I have said before that the board's annual report to the governor reads more like a brochure promoting career colleges than like a regulatory board. Let us change that with your lawsuit. Please read or re-read my posts on the board to see how their incompetence and closeness with the trade group of the industry that they are directed to regulate has led to the position that you are in....Either you have graduated from a substandard program or you are one of those who are out of luck and forced to sue to get your money back. This is shameful and let us get some publicity going this way so that the changes needed can finally take place that will actually protect the students of Ohio.

  116. Oh, happy day!Let the lawsuits begin.

  117. The truth is coming out a little at a time. You are now seeing the "Real" MJCC. Darlene is gone, Faith is gone however; some people in power still exist who cause these issues. Why does Delta keep some of the so called "leaders" around? Why do they allow uneducated/unexpereinced people to operate the colleges? For exaample, Letha Allen of the Troy Campus is hated by the studnets and staff adn she does not have a degree! Angela Martin of the Dayton Campus worked in human resources before she was placed in the role of Academic Dean - NO Masters degree! Christine Dosland Sharonville Campus was moved from Dayton to Springboro to Sharonville due to serveral problems she caused. She used to be a medical assistant for God's sake. Melody Gast Springboro Campus problem after problem and NO Masters degree. Why Delta? Why do you continue to allow damage to come to our schools. We the studnets want this to be over. Stop the maddness!! Replace your problems before all of the campuses close the doors!

  118. Connie, I started the Miami Jacobs lpn program in July 2010 at the Troy Campus, I was not aware of any problems with the program until after 2 weeks at the school when I heard about it on the news, we asked to have a meeting about it, which Letha Allen came to our class and told us we were the last nursing class to be started at MJ until the nursing board made its final decision but NOT to worry if we were already in the program we would be safe that we were under some kind of umbrella and we would be allowed to finish and sit for our boards!! Total lies and she knew it she even told us that the people who were causing problems and suing the school were past students who were not good students and couldnt get good grades so they were mad at the school! LIE!! keep in mind we had only been in the school for 2 weeks so we had no idea what was going on except what we were being told by school. Needless to say we went on and did our work and I had to go to the dean and other officials at the school to complain several times because of the quality of education which was way less that suitable! Bad teachers, bad classes, bad everything, all the teachers did was read a powerpoint that was standard issue for all the teachers who taught each class, gave us tests and if we failed gave us points to make sure we didnt fail so we could go on and give them more money for the next quarter. I complained about all this and more and noone cared. My final straw was at the end of this last quarter that ended at the end of Dec 2010 when we were taking our IV certification written test and noone passed it because they fired the instructor in the middle of the quarter and give us all new ones for all our classes and he gave us the test unexpectedly one day because noone follows a syllabus there. We all took it everyone in our class failed it he came into the next class very disgruntled at us all basically calling us dumbasses!! A couple of us tried to explain we were not prepared to take the test he got mad gave us all the answers and had us retake the test so we could pass it!! I did not retake it I was so mad about this. Then we did the actual IV stick which was done on a fake arm, NOONE in my class could pass it either and he became irrate again, there were girls who actually were inserting the iv upside down, from the wrong direction!! One girl had taken the class before and was already certified, and she put it in upside down!! Before we did this part we were to sign a document stating that we had 20 hrs of training!! When people were failing it, the instructor became irrate once again and said "Can anyone insert an iv in this class?" "if not dont waste my time" which i replied noone is wasting your time, You are getting paid to be here and teach us how to do this. The instructors dont understand that they DONT teach us anything and when we cant pass its THEIR fault not ours, we had about 1 hour of training not 20 and I was not about to falsify documents like they wanted us to. I went to find my husband who is also a student there and told him and he came to the class door and overheard my conversation with the instructor where he wanted me to sign a write up and i refused and walked out to find the Dean and have ANOTHER talk with him bout the poor education that i am paying ALOT of money for. I told him at that time I was dropping out and he said to think about it and let him know before the next quarter started. I also told him how can he sleep at night knowing he is sending students out of here with a poor education, along with some other things and if anyone knows the Dean at Troy campus he smiled and said nothing!! The next class the instructor had everyone insert the iv again and miracously everyone did it right??? No I dont think so he just passed them all to move them along!! I wasnt at that class but I know from some other students.

  119. Sorry had so much to type I had to make two post!

My question is Miami Jacobs lied to us from the get go and knew we would not be safe if the program was shut down. If you have any advice on how to get an attorney or who to get that would be great.

SHAME ON YOU MJCC, Letha Allen, Jackie, Dean Clark, Ms. Eva and everyone else who lied to us about staying in the program and we would be taken care of!! we got take alright, and now we owe alot of student loans because of the lies we were told!

    ReplyDelete
  120. Anonymous go see an attorney. The school doesn't want or need bad publicity. Contact your fellow classmates, see an attorney, sue and get your money back. The college will give you what you want in order to cover their behinds, guaranteed. They enter into contracts with students and do not provide what they have promised. It is fraud and misrepresentation and it is illegal! Good luck,...don't take it lying down. Stand up and fight for your rights.

    ReplyDelete
  121. To Anonymous who asked about the attorney. You should contact Erin Moore of Green and Green. They are located in the Schuster Building in downtown Dayton. Erin was one of the attorneys of record for the surgical tech lawsuit. She also has been retained by several other students. I believe that Erin is your best best because she knows more about this school than any other attorney in town and how they operated. Nothing you tell her will surprise her. I believe that Erin was instrumental in getting Representative Clayton Luckie on board and talking to the media about problems at the school. I do know she was there at the press conference when Luckie was talking to the press just outside the school.

This is exactly what I was talking about in reference to the Ohio Board of Career Colleges. As LATE as July of 2010, this school was still enrolling students into the nursing program knowing damn well that most likely they would be shut down and the Ohio Board of Career Colleges ALLOWED IT! This burns me up!!!!!! Please, please, please make the Ohio Board of Career Colleges a party in this suit. They are as liable as Miami-Jacobs as they knew what was going on and allowed it. Not only did students incur debt in the form of loans, they also paid sitters, gas money to and from school, time at home doing school work....and at least 6 months loss of future income from not being able to use this education! I am ashamed and appalled at JOHN WARE AND HIS CRONIES at the board who have been charged by LAW to PROTECT THE STUDENTS FROM UNSCRUPULOUS schools and HAVE FAILED TO PROTECT THEM. They all need to be FIRED immediately!!!!!

  122. The former students that sued Miami Jacobs got $20-60,000,Erin Moore and Jane(I can't recall her last name at this time) are the attorney's that successfully fought their cases.I don't know how Brandy and the other instructors sleep at night knowing what they have done to the students,I really don't.They are a disgrace to the nursing profession.I dream that one day, and know that life is funny like this, some of the students they hurt will be the very people that will have to tend to them and/or their very sick family members.

  123. MJCC has studnets sign an application when they enter that states that any law suit can not go in front of a jury. This is why everything is handled "out of court". Admissions is trained to ensure the studnets signs and initals the documents so it is legal. Beware of what you sign and ask for copies of EVERYTHING!!! Academics is also aware of this process. The are covering their a**. Sad but true!

    ReplyDelete
  124. I believe the decision to suspend MJCC's nursing certification was set aside by the court so they will be still teaching the PN program until this makes it way through the legal system.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Does anyone else see the extreme irony and total unfairness to this? Miami-Jacobs has access to the courts that it DENIES its very own students through the "enrollment agreement!" Whether you are one of the few who think the school is the greatest thing since Harvard or whether you are one of its victims, there is one thing in common that you all have....though you were informed about having to use an arbitration process at enrollment, it was glossed over and NOT really explained to you. MOST of you HAD NO IDEA that the "enrollment agreement" was actually a binding CONTRACT that denied you access to the court system, WHILE RETAINING THEIR OWN RIGHTS TO IT. Of course, if you don't sign it, you don't go there (but it that a bad thing?). Now, this is another issue that I have with the Ohio Board of Career Colleges. Are they REALLY protecting the students of the state of Ohio by allowing the schools to have an arbitration clause in the enrollment agreement? I think not! There would be no reason to sue the school if it was doing its job, ergo, no reason for the arbitration clause.

I am very, very upset that a judge would set aside a decision from a board who obviously has given this school EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO GET IT RIGHT, since the program's inception ALMOST FIVE YEARS AGO. This program is a cash cow for MJCC as you can see by their willingness to fight for it as opposed to allowing the respiratory therapy program, another sub-par program, to go away. I am very disappointed in the legal system today.

  126. Update the Sharonville campus "eliminted" its Career Services Department last week. All three people were let go in the department and told that others campuses will be helping out until they decide what the next step will be. Sounds like the doors will be closing soon!

    ReplyDelete
  127. From what I read, the judge allowed only the current nursing students to finish their studies and then the program goes away. Am I correct here? I've gotten very little information on it and really had to dig for that.

Miami-Jacobs really "put all their eggs in one basket" with the nursing program. It was the most popular and the loss, along with the negative publicity that they have received, has obviously affected the enrollment numbers. It is a shame FOR THE STUDENTS that MJCC just couldn't get it right. What a comedy of errors. That was what I saw when my own daughter was a victim of their one of their screw-ups. It was more than obvious that the student was the last concern and that they were willing to go the extra mile to cover their own asses. I hate that the students have gotten the bad end of the deal and that many employers are leary of graduates of the school. However, the alternative was to allow them to keep operating slyly and without consequences while stealing the futures of so, so many students, not to mention stealing tax payer dollars. I am looking forward to the demise of this "school" who has traded on an old and respected name while ripping off students with educations that they can't use and loans they can't afford to pay off. It is criminal and I hope that we have not only the students' day in civil court, but I would like to see someone pay for their CRIMINAL ACTIONS as well.

  128. This isn't isolated to Ohio. MMTC in Chattanooga Tennessee has been playing this game for a while. Same problems just a different location.

    ReplyDelete
  129. If you are speaking of Miller Motte Technical College, I am well aware. They are also owned by Delta Career Education Corporation. This school was also chosen for its longevity and reputation in the community. In no time flat, they had branched out from the original location in Wilmington, NC to, I think, 5 different states.

I have had some contact with some Miller Motte students. One was distraught to find out that the dental assisting program was NOT ACCREDITED properly....same ole same ole....different state, different name, same ole song and dance, ripping off students and the taxpayers in the name of education. It is pathetic and I hope that they are stopped at ALL locations.

In fact, I called the school myself, asking about accreditation and other aspects of the dental program. When they thought I was an interested student, I even rated a call back with an answer to a more common question (can't remember what it was). After I asked about accreditation, they told me that they were accredited by ACICS (Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools). Fine and dandy, but are you accredited properly by the American Dental Association? (a must for a dental program....) I am still waiting for my call back.....The ACICS is an accrediting body that isn't worth the time it takes to type their name. What does it mean? NOTHING! It doesn't mean that the credits transfer, it obviously doesn't mean the programs are superior, so what does it mean? Obviously diddly squat.

  130. Do not think that Miami Jacobs has won, they have not.I know the judge ruled to "stay" the boards decision which is only prolonging the inevitable, they are going to shut down,no business can operate successfully with all the bad publicity they are getting, sure, some people will still register there(that's just the way it is) but how many more will not, this has hurt them where to them it matters the most, financially, and it's not over yet.Ask yourself,if you are contemplating going back to school would Miami Jacobs be a school that you would consider going to? The commercials they run on tv is a pitiful attempt to still try to sell themselves, what an arrogant bunch of fools they are. They will go down in spite of setbacks(judge rules to stay boards order),some of us are just not willing to let it go.I thank all the ones that post information on this site,I didn't know about them closing one of their student services in Sharonville, should close them all,who have they helped get a job in their field? People with the know how and ability to deal with that school according to the law read this site so keep posting everyone, their end is nearer than they know.

  131. All the "eliminated" employees need to take a stand and tell the dirty little secrets that MJCC has been hiding for years. Games over Delta the cat is out of the bad. Let the truth begin!

    ReplyDelete
  132. That would be wonderful....but I'll bet that the employees were given some kind of severance to sign a confidentiality agreement. Otherwise, we would have had more people talking before now, I think.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Please, please, please, former employees-take a stand and tell your stories, you don't have to tell who you are just what some of your experiences where,we need it to come out, people are fighting this school, some have actually lost their homes to forclosure not to mention countless others that now have bad credit due to the excessively high loans they must pay back for a degree that you all know is worthless in this community, which just sets us further back. Most of us really didn't know just how bad miami jacobs really was when we signed on,we really thought this was a good way to get what we needed to build a better life for ourselves and our families, yes we believed their lies which they told so well. You would be surprised at who reads this blog, you really would be,so tell your accounts, let them sweat, they can't hurt you now but by telling your accounts at least you will know you have done the right thing.

    ReplyDelete
  134. I declined the severance pay and therefore did not sign the confidentiality agreement because I knew it would mean that I would have to keep their secrets for them. It won't be long,...and the truth will come out. I have much to disclose, so they can either choose to do the right thing or I will retain my right to free speech. I swear to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help me God.

    ReplyDelete
  135. MMTC in Chattanooga should learn Integrity and Character because this former employee isn't scared or intimidated by their low class antics. Some things may have been covered up legally, however morales are something most of us value and when we're talking about each student paying between 30,000 and 40,000 for an education, I think it is safe to assume that they are putting their trust in your honesty, integrity and morale fiber. One way or another those of you who think you are untouchable, will be exposed, so good luck with that.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Here we have two former employees of Delta Career Education: one from Miami-Jacobs Career College and one from Miller-Motte Technical College. Yet, in both these letters, we have not learned anything, but confirmation that I was right and that former employees are offered severance in exchange for confidentiality. Not surprised, but highly disgusted.

Please disclose what you know to help all the students -- former, current and, God forbid, future students -- to have a future. I started this blog because I realized that there was a major problem at MJCC, that they just did not care that THEIR actions ruined the future of my daughter and even though they had connections to fix the problem, had they admitted to it, they were just like, "Next!" I told my daughter right then that it wasn't just about her or about getting Marcia Byrd (who has to be the MOST INCOMPETENT financial aid DIRECTOR ever!)fired, which I had a burning desire to see that happen, I will admit. IT WAS ABOUT ALL THE STUDENTS WHO DIDN'T HAVE A PARENT WHO COULD OR WOULD HELP TO FIX THAT STUDENT'S FUTURE. What incompetence! What condescension! What rudeness! I was a PARENT, treated that way. There were so many red flags. They shut down when I asked for their "chain of command." They did not want the world to know who owned them, because they wanted the citizen of Dayton (and surrounding areas) to equate them with an old and respected business college, not the fly-by-night operation that they really are.

I started this blog to help the other students, and hopefully, give potential students enough information to make a sound decision, because they sure were not getting the truth from the Admissions rep. Recall that I went with my daughter to see the Admissions rep. I know the spiel and what they tell the students (and parents -- I asked a ton of questions!) LIES! HALF-TRUTHS!

Please step forward for all the students who dreamed of a brighter future for themselves and their families and who were promised that and who ended up disillusioned and with a pile of debt, but no way to pay it back. If you care at all for any of the students you dealt with as employees, please come forth for their sakes. My own daughter, had I not been tenacious, would not have a future for my two sweet grandbabies, ages 1 and 5. It does not just affect the student. It keeps poor people poor! It keeps children in poverty, it keeps the welfare rolls up. Please step up to the plate and give these poor disillusioned students hope again for the future.

  137. I was an employee at the Troy campus, Letha Allen, the campus director gave all of the program directors Magic Erasors in order to remove the scuff marks from each respective areas of the campus. I was asked to work 80 hours a week and when i refused, they fired me. They wanted me to give my life to the school, and since the presedent Darlene Waite and the Troy campus director Letha Allen did, I was expected to as well. This place is a complete joke, only caring about the almighty dollar. They will tell the student what ever they have to in order to get them in. Tonya Dyer and Faith Mitchell are the most worthless people I have ever met or worked with. Letha Allen is no better.

    ReplyDelete
  138. I only had two meetings (two days in a row) at the school after my daughter's problem occurred and both times Faith Mitchell was close by. I could tell by the second visit that Faith Mitchell was worthless and, after receiving my letter telling me that I, the PARENT, had violated the student code of conduct and wasn't welcome at the school, I knew she was worthless. I have never met Ms. Dyer, but it was so obvious that there was a problem at the school. I really do not know how they got away with it for so long.

I appreciate you stepping up and please, tell us more.

    ReplyDelete
  139. I am an employee at the Sharonville campus. I personally have had problems with Faith Mitchell. Faith Mitchell lies and cheats just to get what she wants (she is not longer here). As far as Tonya Dyer she has worked at the Dayton, Troy and Sharonville campuses. It was obvious she cared about the students and everyone that has talked to me loved her. In my option she was done dirty by Delta. The lady above mentioned that she was asked to clean walls at the Troy campus. I have been told this as well. The only program director that has been let go from that campus was the business program director and it was due to the fact the business program had too little students not any other reason.

  140. Kathy Hughes was the program director at Troy who got fired.

  141. Tonya Dyer helped me find a job and always made me feel good about myself. This Kathy Hughes person does not know what she is talking about. Ms. Dyer still keeps in touch with me even know she is no longer with Miami Jacobs.

  142. Ok, I have never been on this site but my friend from Troy told me some smack talk was going down about Ms. Dyer. I know Kathy Hughes while she was our program director. The woman was a joke! She was so unprofessional and complained all the time. She talked about how bad the school was to the class. She was never happy and was down right rude. We were very happy when she left. Ms. Dyer always had a smile on her face and really helped us. Even when she was moved to Sharonville she would come to the Troy campus to see us. If she was so bad why did she go out of her way in all that she did. Try checking out her LinkIn page or Facebook page studnets and graduates respect and love her. Ms. Hughes you are as lame as I knew you were!

  143. The previous letter shows that, quite often, there are two sides to a story. It is amazing how two different people can have two different experiences and views when, to other eyes, they are doing the same thing -- as in two students (or teachers) at MJCC who are both attending, but come away with different ideas about the place).

One reason for that is the person's general outlook on life, either positive or negative. However, I AM NOT SAYING that it explains every viewpoint at MJCC. Many students have very, very legitimate complaints.

Another reason is PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. Let's face it, some people are treated differently in the same situation, i.e. teachers or students have favorites, it is a proven fact that names, looks, popularity, etc., make various people treat others a certain way.

This blog aims to give EVERYONE a platform to speak and give their opinion. It is then up to the individual reader to form THEIR OWN OPINION, based on what they have read.

I have no personal experience with Ms. Dyer and so have no comment on her as a person or teacher, director or employee of MJCC.

Everyone who responds here has a reason for doing so. For some, like me, it is to make the reader THINK and to pull the curtain open on the stage that MJCC performs on. I want people to make an informed decision on whether they should enroll or continue with their education, based on ALL the information here.

There are only one or two people who have stepped forward and said who they are. I only know for sure that Ms. Milbrey is who she says she is. I have never hidden my identity with a pseudonymn and have given direct contact information.

This means that anyone can say anything based on the anomymity of the internet. I stepped forward because I wanted the reader to be able to trust me and also because I was NEVER EVER worried about what I have written about here. I research everything I write about or I let the reader know that it is based on the information I have received from others.

Each person who reads anything here needs to keep in mind that they do not know who wrote what, what the motivation is and go from there. There is too much here and from too many people to discount everyone, but statistics tell us that not everyone who has written here has a pure motive.

I really prefer that, when naming names, that all commenters are very specific as to what occurred and a timeline of when it occurred. I AM NOT ASKING ANYONE TO GIVE UP THEIR ANOMYMITY, just try to be as specific as possible, which makes the goal of the writer a bit more clear. The goal here, for me as the author of this blog, is not to smear people without cause, but to give others a REAL AND ACCURATE view of what the school really stands for and what quality of education one gets for $22,000 plus dollars at MJCC.

I don't know how to say what needs to be said with out fear and reprisal from them. I wonder if there is a way for Connie to facilitate a meeting between us former students and current students. Have I known about the nursing problems and had read anything on the school and the things I have personally experienced I would have chosen another school.

I am not giving up this fight, though I am devastated to announce that my little granddaughter is in a coma and may not come through. Some of you may recall that she had a tumor last year and that I have been concentrating on her recovery. She had come so far! Yet, another tumor appeared and now it has hemorrhaged, leaving her in the coma. Please pray for her, for only a miracle can save her.

Even during this time, I have spoken with several students, so do not be afraid to call. Having other things to occupy my mind is a good thing. Again, please pray for a miracle for Lexi.

  150. Thank you so much. Lexi still needs all the prayers she can get. Lexi had a hemorrhage of the brain tumor that leaked onto her brain stem, making them call it a "brain stem stroke," and leaving her comatose. The ICU doc wanted us to pull the plug and make her die, saying she would never get any better than she was at that moment. We refused. Three days later, they told us of a "therapy" to awaken comatose patients using Ritalin. Since then, she has become much more aware, though she sleeps most of the time. She can grasp my hand, turn at the sound of our voices, cry a little, yank the oxygen tubing off of her trach, and more stuff every day. She is 1000 times improved from when they wanted us to let her go, but has a long, long way to go. We have not given up on a miracle and there are thousands of people praying for her, but we need thousands more. We have her at home now and are taking care of her, keeping me busy -- and tired -- all the time, but she is so worth it all. Thank you so much for asking about her.

  152. Connie, I just found this site and have been ready everything I can about MJCC. I hope your grandaughter is doing better. I am praying for you and your family.
I went to MJCC in Troy and was wondering if you have any information about the Medical Assisting program. We heard rumers about the nurse program and they told us they weren't true(2008). The school had a teacher turnover rate in our program that had all of us students worried we were doomed but we were too far into the program to turn back. We had a friendly teacher Mrs Oppy but they had her doing way to much (teaching day and night)and we the students were paying for her being worn out. Mrs. Swonger is an GREAT teacher but there is only so much one person can do to help you. When I graduated (which was a yr ago)I never heard from MJCC again except for a survay about the school they mailed me. I never filled it out because they didn't want to know how I really felt. The school tells you they will help you find a job and Career services NEVER sent me a job lead. I even asked them for help and to review my resume to make sure everything was ok, and still not one job lead. I can't help but wonder if I can't get a job in the medical field because I went to MJCC. I went to school to better myself, get away from an abusive husband and to show my kids it is never to late to change your life. Since I have graduated I feel that I have let my kids and myself down because I can't get a job. I am just another MJCC graduate looking for answers about the school we went to and what we can do to make things right. I hope I didn't go to school for 2 years just to rake up almost $30,ooo for nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  153. So, so sweet of you to think of and pray for my darling Lexi. Her condition is not good at all and she needs all the prayers she can get. However, I have not given up on her and we are still trying everything possible to give her a chance at life.

Unfortunately, if you have read these comments, you see that your situation is a common one for students of MJCC. Unfortunately, when we bring fraudulent and deceptive practices of a school into the open, we also bring a negative impact to the students who have worked so hard and paid so much for an education. Still, I hope you see why it has to be done. If you had known then what you know now, would you have chosen MJCC? The public needed to know that this school is not the 150 year old institution it claims, but part of a chain that used deceptive practices to get students to enroll. Due to our babie's illness, I am not as in the loop right now as I would like to be. I know changes have been made in the administration of the school and hope that most of these problems are being addressed. Are they? Anyone out there with a recent update?

  157. Thank you so much for praying for Lexi. She is in the hospital, but doing well enough to go home probably tomorrow. She had two small repiratory issues that, together, caused a few problems. We are not giving up on her and I ask that you all continue to pray for her and send out those positive loving thoughts for her.

As for MJCC, we definitely hope that both the state and federal legislature will fix this broken mess they call "for-profit" colleges. First, we all have to let our legislators know that we are tired of them putting big business before the people. Whether you are an Obama fan or not, last year, he tried to target for-profit colleges and the massive tuition for low paying jobs. All of the for-profit lobbyists rallied around, the pres of Kaplan flying in FIVE times on his private jet to personally lobby Congressmen and, of course, the bill was shot down. There is so much more that is needed, that, at times, it seems insurmountable. How many more young lives need to be ruined before this is fixed? It is shameful and I sure wish that I had more time to devote to it right now. I do agree that, some day it will happen, but in the meantime, we just have to make sure that schools like MJCC are outed to the public so that the potential students can make a qualified decision on whether to attend.
